Simple Video Editing? What App To Use?

I have some mp4s that I want to edit some really simple editing for. What's the best way to do this?
Is there a free solution? Will the newest iMovie let me clip together something simple?

I would think so.

But from experience, Macs don't play well with MP4s. (At least not the ones I made on my phone)

Of course they do. It is just that MP4s are not an editing format so editing with it is suboptimal. The Mac video editing programs are designed to edit proper video footage captured from a camcorder.
