To me, continuous led indicator = battery drainer.

But custom vibrations and tones for each contact works for me.

I do miss that feature though on my old blackberry back in high school. Also reminds me of those airplane lights.

LEDs use almost no battery. An LED on all say would use less battery than turning on your screen for 20 minutes. And the idea is that it would only be on when you has messages to check, so not constant.

New iPhone owner here & former CrackBerry owner...

I do miss the blinking LED and BeBuzz on my 9850 with the endless possibility of colored LED notifications for everything. :)

I did feel like I was attached to it, every time that LED was blinking for a notification I grabbed the phone to look at it and instantly reply.

I've noticed I don't check the iPhone as often, which I think is a good thing.

Withdraw symptoms I guess... I'll get over it though, iOS is a much nicer platform and integrates better with the rest of my Mac family.

If they would illuminate the white ring around the home button that would be cool. My gnex allowed me to set a different led color for everything, but like I said it never worked. Well it worked but it was always giving false notifications.

you can customize it. enable it for alerts that are important to you. and you can assign different colors. blue for Facebook. green for gmail. purple for yahoo. red for texts, etc. there are a lot of different settings, depending on the phone you have.

for 2-4, with an LED light, you never even have to check the screen. a quick glance in the direction of your phone and you'll know if you have anything pending.

His point was 3 and 4 are times he would have to pull it from his pocket to see the LED anyway so why not just check he screen.

That wing said, the LED indicator is one of the most useless requests. It's not that hard to look at the screen, personally I would prefer them to but the little indicators in the status bar.

Also, you can us the flash for notifications.

Those of you posting in this thread who would like an LED are wasting your time. Two years ago when I moved away from iOS for this very reason, I started a similar thread. The trouble is, the "Apple can do no wrong" crowd came on here and explained why such a feature would be totally useless (even though they could simply turn it off if they really felt so strongly) and how the Apple method of waking the screen is perfect. These are the same guys that would be praising this "magical innovative" feature if/when Apple does implement it.

it's funny when apple exludes something people "adapt" to it.

A LED notification could be done nicely and not too abrasive on the iPhone. I really doubt it would take away from the beauty of the iPhone.

I may be returning my IPhone 5 and keeping my Blackberry 9900 because there is not an LED. I’m a little in the dark now because there is not an LED to flash if something super important was occurring. I don't know if I am missing anything important without turning on the screen. Seems strange to have to reach for your phone and turn the screen on all the time. I don’t want to set it to chime 10 times until the action item is handled. Several million iPhone users can't be wrong. Since there is not an LED, what do you use for urgent alerts? Is there an app for this?

Pretty much sums it up..... society is truly doomed.

rather have pushed notifications than a bright light flashing. Isn't that was sound notifications are for?

Here's another question I have. What does this LED show you?

Does it flash for Facebook updates? New RSS feed additions? UPS tracking info updates? Instant Messages in 3rd party apps that aren't texts?

Like, can you set the thing to work with any app, or is it just texts and phone calls?

I'm just trying to figure out how this thing works.

On the BB it flashed if you had a text waiting, a missed call, voicemail waiting, email waiting, or BBM. And yes, if you installed social apps, it would flash for those too. LED notification is definitely a great feature that would have been inexpensive to add to iPhone, and easily implemented to iOS I think.

This is the number 1 thing I miss from my BB as well. Somehow Apple refuses to put a notification light on their phones. If you left your phone sitting on the table and came into the room 5, or 10, or 30 minutes later, you have to press the button to see if you have any messages waiting or a missed call. With a BB, you'd know as soon as you laid eyes on the phone, no need to even touch it.

Only a BB user would leave their phone for 30 minutes on a table in a room when something urgent might happen or need to receive a call! Then they're too lazy to push a button to check their notifications, it's a non point.

It's old people syndrome, my parents leave their phone and don't take it with them or at least used to. No one needs LED lights on phones.

When my phone is charging and not in arms reach, I check messages like this “hey siri, do I have any messages?”. In other circumstances it is within a minor movement of my wrist to tap the home button, or in my pocket. SMS, Gchat, iMessage, FaceTime, phone calls and email all come through to my Mac or iPad anyway

I also keep the phone face up and look at incoming notifications. If something is mission critical, I make sure my phone is as close to me as possible and in line of sight.

All of this is moot once the watch releases any way, and I can literally look at my arm to see the exact content of a notification.

But no, I can see why I’d like a single LED light; for the added mystery of knowing that I have “a notification” but not the type or content of it.

I do nothing special for urgent notifications. I mean if something is urgent, I'll get texted or called. I'll either pick up the phone for the call or read the text. I don't think I need something special to further notify me.

Thanks for reminding me of something I didn't miss. I think I would like LED notifications but I manage to live without because at the moment my calls aren't that important.

LED notifications aren't missed because...

iPhone owners are recreational phone users.

Thank goodness my phone doesn't flash like a hyperactive child on too much candy. When urgent things happen people call me. The existing notification system is more than enough to let me know what's going on. I don't need my phone to hector me.

Not sure I understand the context of recreational here to be honest. How do you mean?

Well I can imagine for some professionals it would be important to be notified of important emails and other updates while in a silent environment while they are not able to keep their eyes on their iPhone screens all the time (or have their iPhones flash) and are not able to check their iPhones all the time, in which case LED notifications are necessary.

iPhone users can live without.

I was being facetious about "recreational users" but it's true Blackberry users came before iPhone users and most used their phones for work while most iPhone users I would imagine i) did not buy it for work and ii) do not primarily use it for work.

Since there is not an LED, what do you use for notification of urgent items?

You know that you can use the cameras flash for notifications right? Yeah its not quite the same but just set your phone face down.

Settings>general>accessibility>turn on flash for alerts

Led lights are very useful. Esp if it's color coded. Miss it from my blackberry 9900.

What if you go to asleep and you get a notification and the phone is nearby on a nightstand out of reach and you have trouble sleeping because of the flashing light?

Normally it would just vibrate and be done with it but now its overly obtrusive and keeps flashing in the dark and affecting your ability to fall asleep...

It only takes an extra second to turn on the screen and see if you have any notifications. If you aren't looking at your phone you're not going to see the LED if there was one anyways.

The Blackberry is a relic and may it rest in the annals of history. The fate of Palm and the many failed companies is what happens when you live in the past - be it the mechanical keyboard, LEDs, etc. People living in the past who can't get rid of their old habits might similarly find themselves slowly lagging behind their more advanced co-workers and they'll likely be the ones left behind for promotions and first ones out the door during layoffs.

Businesses are letting people use whatever they want - they'll support Android and iOS because there's already ways to replace the Blackberry and get tons of additional functionality and apps to personal devices. BYOD is big, and it saves the money not having to give out devices and pay fully for monthly fees.
