I'd just get it. You'll be eligible for the $9.95 upgrade to SL.

If you need help, post in the appropriate place here at MR, or use the Apple Discussions area.

I'm in the same boat with you all. I am mulling over the possibility of getting a new iMac and was hoping for some news today at the WWDC.

I'm thinking of waiting, however, for the following reason: it seems to me that the last "upgrade" to the iMac line was so minimal, that there is a greater chance than normal that Apple will refresh the line sometime this fall, rather than next year. I could be way off here, but it seems to me that 2 years of generally the same specs for the iMac is a REALLY long time to go without a more dramatic refresh. I'm wondering also if they will release a new iMac soon after SL comes out. Hmmmmm...

how does it work?
when i buy my iMac do i juss keep my reciept and when I go
get SL i can juss show em and get it for dat price or sumin?

Wow, I thought they spoke English in Canada... ;)

Yeah that's kinda where I am too. I'm thinking of getting the last gen iMac but I bet by fall they'll update them. I just have no idea if it'll be a minimal update like the last couple of times or a total refresh. Worse, what if the last gen iMac can't support certain SL features?

The current iMac supports all SL features, doesn't it? Just curious

Apple is not going to release an OS that renders the current generation of computers obsolete. They're not idiots. They just put the 9400M into every one of their computers except the Mac Pro - they're not going to turn around and say Snow Leopard will not run with that graphics chip.

If you want it now, just buy it.

Yes, but I was referring to the last gen iMac, which has the 2600 HD card.

Buy it! They were updated 3 months ago and last update took almost a year. No updates before Q4 '09 or Q1 '10

Another reason to think they might upgrade with the release of Snow Leopard: the GPUs in the previous generation (2008) will not support OpenCL.

How do we know which GPUs support Open CL? I was under the impression the 2600 HD pro was a "better" GPU than in the current gen iMac.

But the current do? Then why would they upgrade it?

My point is this:

1. Most agree that the 2009 generation iMacs are only a minimal upgrade over the 2008's, as far as specs go.

2. Only the current generation imac will be able to utilize OpenCL due to the particular GPU's they use. The 2008 models will not, and therefore be comparatively obsolete.

3. Hence, the only iMac which will be able to utilize the latest OS fully will be six months old (a lifetime in technology terms) by the time SL comes out, and even older, when you consider that they don't differ that much from the 2008's. This is equivalent to buying the first electric car so that it can run without gas... but, in the end, you're stuck buying a car that's 15 years old.

Thus, I'm wagering that Apple will want a new iMac model to coincide with the release of SL that will: a. be the first substantial upgrade to the iMac line in 2 years, and b. allow for two generations of iMacs to fully utilize the new OS, instead of just the most recent (which happens to have rather outdated specs).

I could be way off on this, but I'm holding off buying an iMac for these reasons.

Ahhh. Well, that seals it then. No iMac for me, for now. I'd rather get one that supports OpenCL. Are there any estimates for how much of a boost it can give?

Nobody knows for sure yet, but look at the specs for the GPU. That will probably be a good indicator of the performance boost.
