You could probably get a refurbished 24" model with a faster processor for about the same price. I would check the refurbished section (or check Best Buy for remaining stock of the older models). That's what I did and got the 2.8GHz 24-inch model for $1100 bucks, brand new)

My point is this:

1. Most agree that the 2009 generation iMacs are only a minimal upgrade over the 2008's, as far as specs go.

2. Only the current generation imac will be able to utilize OpenCL due to the particular GPU's they use. The 2008 models will not, and therefore be comparatively obsolete.

3. Hence, the only iMac which will be able to utilize the latest OS fully will be six months old (a lifetime in technology terms) by the time SL comes out, and even older, when you consider that they don't differ that much from the 2008's. This is equivalent to buying the first electric car so that it can run without gas... but, in the end, you're stuck buying a car that's 15 years old.

Thus, I'm wagering that Apple will want a new iMac model to coincide with the release of SL that will: a. be the first substantial upgrade to the iMac line in 2 years, and b. allow for two generations of iMacs to fully utilize the new OS, instead of just the most recent (which happens to have rather outdated specs).

I could be way off on this, but I'm holding off buying an iMac for these reasons.

Exactly my reasoning, too. I'm pretty confident there will be a new iMac with big upgrades in August or September.

Yes, but then you're stuck with a GPU that doesn't support OpenCL. I think I'll wait. At the very worst, if they just bump the iMac again in Sept, I'll get the current model as a clearance/refurb. At least then it'll support Open CL.

Well, I ordered my iMac yesterday :)
Delivers June 12 - 19.
I did not expect to get so many replies to this thread.

By the way I am not French Canadian, I am Canadian born in Toronto
(I am Brown :D )

Well I guess I am out of luck and will not have the "new"
iMac coming out this year or whatever. :(

Oh, well I bet the new iMac will have some
spec updates and probably a new look but then again Apple does not impress me with WWDC it was crap. They are just selling an iPhone they could
have sold last year to get money and just price cuts on their laptops. I am not happy at the way Apple updates there products.

The iPod Touch first gen could have been the second gen just such little differences I find it quite annoying.

As long as they release a new iMac with a design upgrade after this year I will not regret my purchase because I've been waiting 3 months and 1 more year is too long.

Oh well... my 40 somin year old math teacher
said he was happy for me and told me it was a great move.
He has 5 computers 4 running windows and one Mac.
He loves Macs the best, but my friends were grilling me today because of my purchase :(
