Apple hasn't addressed the Siri security issue where when the phone is locked you can still activate Siri and make a phone call, without unlocking the phone
You can do that with the old voice command, too. Use it every day.

I'm more worried about the loss of the phone and sensitive data if it is lost, not whether or not someone can make a phone call.

Siri, unlock phone...

Since this is made by Wolfram could Siri also do things the website can do like finding the derivative of a function? This would be a killer feature if i didn't need wifi or 3g. As I land up doing my homework on a plane most of the time.

Wut a hype for this toy, tons of nerds talk to cellphones oh pardon, iPhones saying "call mom".
Weak brand-brain washed generation.
You're just a hater who is broke and can't afford to even buy a new pair of underwear. Stop hating. It is non of your business what we do with our lives. Brainwashed. Ha ha!

Can't put the square root of two on the clipboard

One thing that bothers me is when it uses Wolfram to get an answer, you can't copy the results to the clipboard, or do anything else with it except look at it. Most other things, you can copy the info, or touch to go to the app where you can get at it.

lol im sure whoever sits next to you will be happy to here you talking to your phone for the whole flight

Star trek like authorization

I'm not a hard core trekkie but i'd like to see
me: "Call Bob..."
Siri: "Your phone is locked, please provide authorization code"
me: "Authorization alpha two three one" (in Captain Picard's accent)
Siri: "Calling bob..."
or

me: "Call Bob authorization alpha two three one"
Siri: "I'd like to call Bob, but you provided an invalid authorization, please try again."

Actually Wolfram Alpha is just one of the sources that Siri uses. The technology was originally created as part of a project at DARPA aimed t creating learning personal assistants for the military and then spun out by SRI International as the company named Siri. Shortly thereafter Apple bought Siri. They were pretty quick too. I think it was only a matter of weeks after Siri was spun out that Apple made their move.

What I love about this is that we're seeing the emergence of a technological dream here. For decades we've imagined computers would can interact with like people, who can respond intelligently to tasks and questions. This here is a big step towards that dream. Think of what computer games were like two decades ago. Now think of what they're like now. If this technology moves as quickly as the computer games industry did then in twenty years time we'll be talking to computers in full flow, not even bothering to think about it. How anyone can see this and not be excited by it is beyond me. A paradigm shift is underway and we're here to see it begin.

maybe i'm misunderstanding, but the example in the article sounds like asking it a whole new question... i don't get it.

It would be nice if they'd give us the option to start an interaction with Siri directly from the keyboard instead of voice.

I don't recall seeing this in the keynote but if you put the phone to your ear, (provided it is on or at the lock screen) Siri will activate and you can begin talking.

Game Changer: Siri + Jawbone ERA headset

iPhone 4S Siri + a good blutooth headset is a game changer for mobile voice UI compared to Google voice, etc.

Bought some Nuance Communications NUAN:NASDAQ stock today in hopes that natural language cloud services are finally at a tipping point.

Well I'm afraid to say I'm calling Siri a load of bollox... I have an entirely standard, middle of the road British accent and it does not recognize a single phrase... That'll be a total waste of time then.:(

Could it be server load??? She has had her head cut off???

Care to name one?

Android also puts what you vocally search for in a box that you can edit.

It just makes common sense.

But that's pointless. Can you see that? If you are already talking to Siri and it's working, talking more makes the most sense instead of switching to keyboard input.

Unless it can't figure out the technical term you're trying to say. Or you have to go quiet because you moved to a room with the baby sleeping.

I combine voice and manual entry all the time; which one depends on how many hands I have free and my surroundings.

Siri not responding? Servers overloaded?

When I ask Siri questions, the icon just spins and spins and doesn't do anything. Maybe Apple's Siri server is overloaded with people testing it?

Out of about 10 tries, it always just spins and then stops after 20-30 seconds. However, once, it ("she") said something like "I'm having trouble with the network".

Which would be "not working" in my language, which is American English. Doesn't anybody frickin' speak it, anymore?

Rudeness aside, the point is that if voice is working 99%, then it makes sense to be able to quickly fix a typo via keyboard instead of being frustrated and having to do the whole thing via keyboard.

E.g. I ask "Where can I buy chili peppers" and I see the search come up incorrectly as "Where can I buy chilly peppers"... then it would be easier and faster to manually change the "ly" to an "li" and click search again than it would be to respeak it, or switch to keyboard totally and type the whole search in again.

Of course, it'd be even better if I could say, "No, I meant 'chili' with an 'i'" and it understood the reference :)
