still not working

anybody else still in the dark. Siri nor dictation has worked since yesterday morning. In south central PA if that helps/means anything.

There is your mistake: asserting that Voice Command does a really good job. It doesn't. I have never used it for anything other than trying it out as it is far too error prone. Comparing VC to Siri is like Pong Vs the latest version of Halo.

Actually that is not even a valid comparison as what we are really comparing here is Voice Control Vs Nuance. Siri does not get involved till fed by Nuance's voice recognition results.

I used Voice Command all the time, and it worked well from the 3GS to the 4. When I started trying to dial contacts via the headset using Siri, the only difference that I noticed is that it took much longer or frequently didn't complete the task due to network problems.

Never worked reliably for me ever--nor anyone in my circle of friends with iPhones. Worse, it would go right ahead and call the wrong person and I had to rush to stop it. Siri? Recognized just about everything I said right from the get go.

I think there is a reason VC doesn't kick on when there is no access to Siri.

Personally, I think VC was only slapped on to make the iPhone "hands free" as some states were enacting laws requiring it.

I'm in Pittsburgh and I too am still without a Siri connection since yesterday.

Siri up and down for me here in Arizona at the moment.

What's really bothersome is how long it takes for her to say there is a problem.

I have also noticed there is a two-stage delay: one delay for the voice recognition and another to retrieve Siri's result. Right now I can see what I wrote was clearly recognized (call my daughter), as it is on screen but I am still waiting.

OK 30 seconds later it asked me which phone number for my daughter. I tapped mobile and now another LONG delay.

After that long delay Siri said she could not help me.

For sure THESE scenarios should have some kind of fallback scenario. It doesn't take much cloud processing power when I literally tapped the phone number to use for my daughter. There was no reason that could not have triggered the phone call right then and there. Ugh.

Siri's out for me in SF Bay area. I can't even control my music player with it down, and that's what I largely used VC for on the 3GS.

Not surprised

Steve Jobs motto always was about making product as simple as possible: one button mice, two button remote controls, castrated FCPX etc. Well, one can get with over-simplificaton from time to time by claiming that the product is revolutionary and magical. The reality is that in tech world many things are complex for a reason. I suspect that Apple tried to simplify the architecture of their server farm(s) and it did not go well. And now they are paying the price.
APple is good at making simple iToys but not so good when it comes to something more complex (like cloud computing).

This sucks. I never realized how much I use it until now. When I'm driving it's so much nicer to just press the button and speak my texts or tell it what song to play.

It's funny how everyone is mad that Siri went down, but no one is quite realising that Apple is receiving and collecting everything you tell Siri (all your nice reminders, text messages, e-mails) in their cloud infrastructure...

If I were paranoid, I'd quite start thinking about what I tell Siri in the future... ;)

Good point! Apple could really profit off selling that information, I bet that is their main source of income, not satisfied customers buying new hardware at ridiculous rate.

I'm buying a Google phone. They don't collect or sell my personal information.

Siri is a beta service so expect it to get better as Apple comes to terms with the number of requests people hammer the server with and add more servers to iCloud.

But, Apple's ads aren't emphasizing that Siri is beta - someone buying an Iphone might actually expect Siri to be functional.
