I've been saying it for years, but as soon as I can talk to my computer and issue it a wide range of orders, technology will have fulfilled all of the childhood dreams instigated by Star Trek in the early 90's.

Well, almost all of them. I'm still waiting on teleportation technology.

An entire office talking to their computers..... that'd be fun.

For less able bodied people this can only be a good thing.

That is hilarious, touch screen "MAC" patent

Both Jobs and Cook said they will never make a touch screen Mac because that is like combining a fridge with a toaster, the features don't mix.

This is why people hate Apple. I don't care if a company files for 1 million patents at long as each one makes it into a product, or at least offer reasonable licensing fees, but I have little respect for a company that weaponizes patents by using it as a tool to prevent competitive advantage without any inclination to implement the feature themselves. Apple only wants to prevent Google Now from being used on the growing number of PC laptops and hybrids with touch screen capabilities, Apple has no intent to bring touch to Mac, certainly not to support any new Siri like feature.

What's next, a patent to use Siri with a Stylus on an iPhone so they can block Samsung Note sales?

It's nice that Apple is agreeing to stop many of their patent lawsuits, but don't turn around an file more ******** protectionist patents, that is just like calling ceasefire while restocking your bombs.

Also if you are going to bring every feature of iOS to OS X and vice versa, just merge the OS code and get it over with, stop this little dance of suggesting that you can't mix mobile and desktop operating systems while trying to achieve feature parity on both.

That application must be ancient....we no longer refer to "Global warming" since the warming trend levelled off, it is now called "Climate change" instead.

Wow! Rant much? LOL

You realize, don't you that companies apply for patents on literally thousands of things that they think up, with the thought that they might develop it later on? Most of those patents end up going nowhere. Apple is no different than any other tech company in that regard. It's just because you are on an Apple rumors site that puts stories like this in your face all the time.

Not sure who the "people" are that you're referring to who "hate Apple," but you should realize that most of the "people" out there have no idea that these patents are being filed. It's only the relatively few of us who monitor these rumors sites and tech blogs. So, if your assertion is true, and people really do "hate Apple" in droves, they likely have another reason for doing it. Just sayin'...

I find Siri annoying.I've disabled it on my iOS deviced and will do the same if it comes to Mac immediately.

I think Apple is safe here. They do not have to patent this at all. Nobody will copy the so much behind the curve SIRI functionality..

Virtual assistants on your PC will be the next big thing. Imagine if your computer could accurately parse human speech to get you what you want. All of those tedious computer tasks would be a quick, spoken, sentence away.

Apple is making us lazy.

In Classic OS we had to make our own aliases for apps on the desktop and manage system extensions and individual memory app. All with a keyboard and mouse.

In OS X all the memory and extension management is done for you. Also there's the dock so no need to make app aliases for the desktop anymore. And even more keyboard shortcuts so you get to type in less. And don't forget the Apple remote so you can do somethings with a few clicks only.

In the future you'll just be like "Hello computer, open this app for me, do that for me. No clicking required.

We will not have to move a muscle of our body apart from our tongues and mouths to get many computer tasks done on our Macs. Glad Apple is into health and fitness now, we'll need ti to lose the weight put on from "Apple's making us lazy fat asses" campaign.

Yay, another way to have Siri perpetually stuck in beta! I wonder what useless gimmick Aple will introduce next.

Macs (or at least iMacs) with touch screen! We'll see 'em sooner or later.

Didn't Jobs say a touchscreen Mac isn't ergonomically correct?

Yea but there was a patent filed by Apple that shows an iMac with bendable leg/pedestal so that the screen could be repositioned at a comfortable angle to use as a touch device.

We'll see how it turns out.
