I've noticed sometimes I'll unlock my phone and see the location services notification appear.

I'll go dig into it and see that Siri & Dictation is the culprit.

Seems to happen at random times. Sometimes the phone is already unlocked and sometimes not but definitely see it when the phone is idle.

    Why?

Are you sure it's not something else from system services?

I do see that Motion & Calibration and Setting Time Zone were used within the last 24 hours. I didn't think these would be part of Siri & Dictation but I'll turn them off and see if anything changes. Thanks!

For me it was the weather app for some reason

I turned off those two system services I mentioned and simply asked Siri to set an alarm for five minutes. It turned on the GPS. Why does Siri need the GPS for an alarm?

Siri uses location services to know where the device is to provide better answers that are more relevant--I don't think it waits for an appropriate question to be asked before doing that (potentially delaying the answer) but just checks when you initiate Siri basically (if the location services are enabled for it).

That said, seems like the original issue was with location services being used at random times for essentially no reason (even without Siri involvement). Since the additional system services were turned off a few posts ago, has that been happening?

Yes. Just now I noticed it and confirmed it was Siri. All I did was unlock my phone and the GPS indicator was shown.

Strange. I take it the setting for Siri &a Dictation is set to "while using the app"? Are there any other system services enabled still?

    Right.

Here are the three I still have activated. None of them have a purple or gray GPS arrow next to them though.

    Cell Network Search
    Emergency SOS
    Find My iPhone

Odd. Have you tried disabling Siri and then enabling it again to see if that might make a difference? Perhaps restating the device?

(By the way, you don't really need "Cell Network Search" as all that basically does is send cell tower information to Apple.)

Yeah. I did all of that. I just noticed it happened again. Siri was the culprit. I unlocked my phone and there was the GPS indicator lit.

Maybe I should just restore as new...
