Well I'm pretty much tired of hearing about the HomePod.

There are like 20 threads dealing with this toy.

I measure the success of any purchase by the price / years of use.
There's nothing in the Home Pod that can't be improved upon over the next year or so that requires new hardware.
In that respect the Home Pod is a clear success. The software, and AI, are fixable.
Can you say the same about the other smart speakers?

7 likes but, wow, more than twice as many quoted replies trying to shout me down. Made my day! :)
"Me thinks he doth protest too loudly"

I need to remind apple haters on MR more often that:
"I measure the success of any purchase by the price / years of use". It really touches a nerve it seems.
In that respect Apple is, and will be for the foreseeable future, my first choice for computers and electronics.

no search? email?
couldn't do without it myself but everyone has their own points of view of data and that is fine

So? My point is Apple is marketing this as a great sounding speaker with limited voice capabilities. Review it for what it is. And then let people decide if that’s what they want or not. Apple isn’t out there overselling Siri on this thing. The company is mostly focusing on sound quality.
My point is this is marketing 101, they can't trumpet its other points because they are no good and I hear from consumer reports that the other similar speakers are better from Sonos and google.
I also hear that home music/cinema systems are way better too.
So I guess its all marketing from Apple.

Nah, I had a gmail account a while back, but moved everything to iCloud. I use Duck for search. Google doesn't bring me any value so I don't bother with it. If I am going to trust a company with my info, I'd choose Apple over Google.

I measure success by price and innovation/usability. Sadly, I can get more innovation and usability from Google Home for 1/3 of the price.

Maybe someday that will be different. But for now, Apple has lost the benefit of the doubt. It's been years since they've made me say "Wow". (The last time was the MacBook Air, of which I still use one for work, and one for home.)

Home sharing is also proprietary. Sonos can stream from a file share, or if you want to use Metadata tags, Sonos can stream from a Plex server and probably from a DLNA server.

I've been comparing Apple's way to Plex for a while now. I think I will go all the way Plex and Sonos vs Apple's ever shifting directions and half-baked solutions (iTunes with airport express speakers, vs iTunes with Home Sharing, vs iTunes in the cloud, vs Apple Music) I've given Apple a decade to clean up their mess, but it's getting messier and messier.

HomePod married to an individual Apple Music account is not a solution. It's only good for single people living alone in a condo - like Tim Cook.

Give them a break. They were building a new campus.
Sonos can’t stream from a file share using voice controls, which is the point. The HomePod can stream from a million more sources than Sonos via AirPlay, if basic functionality is all you’re looking for.

Some domains like navigation, calendar, email, and calling are simply not supported. These questions were met with, "I can't ___ on HomePod." Also, in any case that iPhone-based Siri would bring up Google search results, HomePod would reply, "I can't get the answer to that on HomePod," which forces you to use your phone or give up on the question altogether. Removing navigation, calling, email, and calendar-related queries from our question set yields a 67% correct response, a jump from overall of 52.3% correct.

This means added support for these domains would bring HomePod performance above that of Alexa (64%) and Cortana (57%), though still shy of Google Home (81%).
Only if the same standards are applied to the other assistants.

Not me. Play, Pause, next, back, volume up, and volume down are all I want. Next week, when I get to try the homePod waiting at my apartment, I plan to see if I can avoid using voice commands altogether. I find digital assistants (any of them) to be 95 percent marketing gimmick and 5 percent useful functionality.
Are you going to select what to play on your phone? Because if you're going to play specific songs, albums, or playlists by voice, Siri's parsing abilities are going to matter. For instance, I tried to play St. Vincent's previous album, St. Vincent, but got snagged because she has two self-titled albums (first and penultimate), not to mention the fact that since St. Vincent is the artist's name, should the request be interpreted as "Play an album called St. Vincent," or "Play some songs by St. Vincent"? I still haven't figured out how to play music by Ta-ku, which Siri interprets as "Taco" ("Puttin' on the Ritz") or "Talking Heads" (!).

On the other hand, I do appreciate some Siri features, like being able to say, "Play songs from Bob Dylan's first four albums," my favorite era of Dylan, or just being able to ask, "What's the name of this song?" Of course, those capabilities are shared by the other assistants.

I’d be more upset with St. Vincent for not being creative enough to come up with album titles.

DO NOT BUY the HomePod. I have been a long-time apple users. Just got an HomePod today., After an hour still have not figured out how to make it work. It forced me into 2 factor authentication which I absolutely did not want. So far nothing is working. Absolutely useless.

PS: After leaving HomePod off for 2 days, I attempted to restart setup. This time it resumed and I was able to complete it. I cannot explain what happened on the first day, but obviously this was a very unpleasant experience.

After playing with the HomePod, I am mostly impressed with the sound quality. Getting music to play on it has been challenging tough (I will not be railroaded into subscribing to Apple Music as I have plenty of music on my own, and I already subscribe to Pandora). What I ended up doing is buying a license of Airfoil (See https://forums.appleinsider.com/dis...g-vinyl-records-with-airfoil-and-a-mac#latest) which allowed me to play my music both on my Bowers & Wilkins direct-connected computer speakers and the Home Pod at the same time. Bingo! This was just great. With AirFoil in the mix, I have now finally figured out how to stream music to the appropriate room at the appropriate time without the MacOS limitation getting in the way.
I am now considering getting additional HomePods.

Be aware that music streamed to the HomePod via AirPlay outside of Apple Music sounds much worse. From what I understand the HomePod gets equalizer settings for each individual song from Apple Music.

I genuinely don’t see the point in buying a HomePod if you don’t have AM... There are many other cheaper speakers that sound just as good and have equivalent functionality when you aren’t using Apple Music.

HomePod seems to have triggered an unusually large degree of hate amongst people who haven't even seen or heard one.

Not that it really matters, but I have two cats and they aren't interested in it at all.

This is interesting. I wonder if Apple is building its own knowledge base, perhaps on its way to an Apple search engine.

They already have their Applebot
web crawler and are presumably learning how to deliver real-time results with Apple News.
They’ve started to do this in iOS11 there something called Siri knowledge and it’s doesn’t seems like it was pulled from google.
Yeah, Siri and Spotlight Suggestions use Applebot.
I forgot they’re also now learning how to do search ads in the App Store.

The point is that for the HomePod to stream from anything except Apple Music, you have to have the phone stream and then airplay to the HomePod. Sonos streams directly from the sources that are compatible with it, which includes Apple Music.

If you are airplaying to the HomePod, you have to worry about the battery.
