How do you get Siri to punctuate?

I thought I once saw a video where the user said " period " to get a full stop (.), and "question mark" to get ?. But if I try this I just get the words.....

it works exactly as advertised for me while dictating.

hello wifey period new line
want to meet me for lunch at tomatinos question mark

Do you mean when you are asking Siri a question? In that case you do not need to punctuate. Only when you are dictating.

No - I meant when dictating text, as in a note or an email.

I say "full stop".

When dictating a SMS or email, I say "period" and it outputs "."

I wonder if it depends on where you are? "Period" in the US, "full stop" in the UK?

What if you want Siri to actually write the word "period"? How do you get her to do that?
