i can still turn the tv on and off with the Siri remote, but all of a sudden volume control stopped working. I went through all the settings a million times, reset my tv and the Apple TV. What else can I try??

how were you controlling volume?
over IR or HDMI.

what are you using for speakers, and how is it connected?
tv speakers
av receiver - aTV connected to TV, and pass-throuh to receiver
av receiver -aTV connected to receiver and pass-through to TV

Try unplugging and replugging Both ends of the HDMI cable, sometimes that clears it up

in the settings app, go to remotes and devices,
under home theater control, what does it say by volume?

It says “auto via IR”, and I don’t have any speaker setup, just the built in speakers

Interestingly I just disconnected and reconnected the TV and Apple TV and also disconnected the hdmi cable and reconnected. Now it’s says “auto via HDMI” but volume still doesn’t work, and the auto via IR option isn’t even there

what kind of TV?
if it supports over HDMI then I would use that. (called HDMI-CEC. or different makers use different names like simpllink or anynet)
and since I just posted in another thread... https://www.howtogeek.com/207186/how-to-enable-hdmi-cec-on-your-tv-and-why-you-should/

the "auto via IR" requires the TV and aTV to talk properly over the HDMI cable. The TV has to send it's model number so the aTV knows which codes to use.

you might need a new HDMI cable, (you don't need $$$$$ monster cables, but cheap cheap HDMI cables aren't your friend)

I will try a new cable. CEC is enabled on my TV. It’s a Hisense tv. Like I said, it just randomly stopped working one day. Maybe it is the cable that went bad, we shall see. But it still turns my tv on and off so it’s odd those functions work but volume doesn’t.
