This is great news. All that is left is ability to set default calendar, mail, and maps apps. The only stock Apple apps I enjoy using are Messages and Notes.

this is truly great for those who prefer Spotify. if you have say 2-3 HomePods it would be better to have that option as they aren't as great if you can't use Spotify by voice demand for example.

Apple last week released beta versions of upcoming iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 updates to developers and public beta testers, and among a number of new features, Apple has added the ability to set a default music streaming service when using Siri to play songs.
The same is true for Podcasts. If you try to ask Siri to play a podcast while in the car you get in an endless loop where Siri is asking you what to play with but you have no way to select it. Only when I tried it out of the car did I realize what was going on.

I’ve turned in a Settings request to Apple to allow a setting that can manage this. It can’t just be a Siri voice option.

Finally!!!! I've tried Apple Music several times and really given it a chance, but I keep coming back to spotify which I like so much more. I wonder if this will work on HomePod as well?

This really needs to be enabled on the HomePod. Ive got amazon prime and YouTube premium.. Im not paying for another service that gives me what the other two do. This is holding me back home getting a few extra HomePod minis.
HomePod is an Siri device..I can’t imagine why it won’t

Meanwhile, Alexa running on my Sonos One decided to start doing the opposite of this in the last few days... I used to be able to say 'Play music', or 'Play radio', and it would start my default music service, Apple Music, and 'my station'. Now... it randomly chooses a genre on Amazon Music. bleh.

After reading the article, I tried it for myself while already playing music from my phone.
I asked Siri to play "Moonlight Drive by The Doors" (the exact song in the article) Siri automatically started playing the requested song on Spotify and I didn't need to specify which app to use.
because this song is hardwired in siri

They need to add the option to fix playing from purchases on the HomePod and not a streaming service. The HomePod’s ability to stream from things I purchased in the past is terrible. Only when I start it on my phone and stream it to the pod work.

So it means that you can use the HomePod and Spotify finally with Siri soon ?
Never been a fan of Apple Music, but just switched from Spotify to AM because of HomePod and the experience improved a lot. Not thinking to return to Spotify soon, AM has actually evolved really nicely.

for whatever reason Apple Music always seems to become louder than on Spotify using my phone/tablet on air pods pro and even my xm3s.

Perhaps for CarPlay, or for when the iPhone anticipates the next apps you are likely going to open, or through Shazam, etc.
Just guessing.

Maybe they don't use Siri, might have switched it off in settings for whatever reason

Sure.

I read it as "why can't I change Siri settings without using Siri", which doesn't strike me as a high priority.

I don't think CarPlay has a notion of a default streaming service, though?
