When they do this it will impress the crap out of me. I have been learning Mandarin for a long time and am still far from fluent. The complexity of the tones makes this no small feat. And being able to combine the various syllables in the correct way has got to be really hard. I would love to have it on my phone just to see if I could speak Mandarin clearly enough for Siri to understand me. I hope I won't be the equivalent of the poor Japanese guy who kept asking "Wha wedder lie" trying to get a forecast and Siri had no idea what he was saying.

If you want to know the weather then stick your head out the window. :p

I thought Canada was getting it first month of 2012. By end of first quarter at the latest... this is BS

Article is a bit off re: Taiwan.

The Taiwanese speak Mandarin just like the Irish speak English. The dialect they are referring to is akin to Gaelic in Ireland - words and phrases in Taiyu come up here and there but isn't spoken regularly especially in the younger generation. It's really no longer the primary language like Cantonese is in Hong Kong/Guangdong.

My guess is that they have to make it different due to political issues (China and its free speech issues). If you ask Siri in Mandarin what happened at Tiannamen in June 1989, you will likely get "sorry I don't know what you mean" in China, whereas you'll get the real story in Taiwan :)

I wish I had an iphone 4S to try this. It looks so cool.
I only have the 3GS.

Apple promises Italian, Spanish and Korean and gives Russian instead...

Now when are Siri's location features going to finally come to Canada?

It was stated that we'd finally get them in 2012 but we're 1.5 months in and there's still no word. I'm tired of only having access to half of what Siri can do.

Hear hear!

I don't see what the hold up is. It's not like the data isn't available - it always was. There's no good reason to hold out this long as far as I'm concerned. And I mean for everyone, not just Canada.

Siri

The selling point to most Americans (not fan boys) was Siri. I wonder how Apple was able to market the iPhone 4s in these countries without the Siri support.

with the revolutionary picture cropping feature of the camera  and yes im dead serious, theres an ad for that

Ut!

Well beam me up Scotty! It's the universal translator! Once Siri can listen in language A and speak the translation in language B, then listen in language B and translate back to language A... unlimited potential.
