Texas, unfortunately.
My parents orderd my sister a Dell for Christmas last night. (I'd better pray she doesn't browse these forums. )

I really tried to persuade them to get her a mac, but they wouldn't listen. I'm hoping that I can presuade my sister to sell the Dell, and get a Mac, but I need some good arguements on why Macs are better. Except for that one. :D

Any idea's?

Couldn't find the exact specs, but here's the model.

EDIT: My parents told her about it, so I don't have to worry about her seeing this thread. (Even though that's highly unlikely, I'm a paranoid person.)

  • It runs Windows
  • It's got a pants motherboard, like every other Dell. My Dimension 8300 has the worst chipset in the world meaning I can't run two hard drives at the same time without losing sound.
  • It's noisy
  • It's expensive for the peformance you get out of it
  • It's not very future proof, as it's soon going to start struggling with Vista. It may say Vista ready, which means it will at least run, but it won't necessarily run it well.
  • It's ugly
  • It doesn't come with any decent software.

I could think of 20 others with time, but I can't be bothered right now. Too late at night

*pen scribbleing* nice, nice...

$679 gets you a A64 X2 3800+ (just a tad below a Core Duo 1.8 in terms of general performance), 1Gb of RAM (equivalent to 2Gb on a Mac due to the superior memory paging of Windows apps), 250Gb HDD, a respectable integrated 'semi-proper' GPU that beats out the GMA 950, a 17" monitor, 1 year on-site service - and having seen the cases up close, not too bad aesthetics although sure, it's not on a par with the Macs. New Dell layouts have very low noise.

The base-model 1Gb 17" iMac with the GMA950 performs worse and costs $1075.

It runs Windows

The user's inability to configure system doesn't mean that it's pants. The motherboard isn't particularly expandable but are the Mini and the iMac? Duh...

It's noisy
Cobblers

Ditto

Neither is a base-model 17" iMac as well prepared for the future, which costs more

It's ugly
Having seen it up close, it's not too bad. Of course though it doesn't get to the Apple level.

It doesn't come with any decent software.
Who cares, with the money you save you can splash out on some apps one step above the nice-but-simplistic iLife.

Shame you couldn't think of any reasons which actually make sense ;)

She doesn't need any high performance anything. In fact, she'd do just fine with a G4 1.25 GHz Mini.

I think the performance of the Dell will determine if your sister will keep or sell the machine. Let it stay at that.

If you look in the specs it doesn't even have Gigabit ethernet, just plain old 10/100. And the floppy drive shows you where things are going.. (And look at the back panel.. and the 'clean' inside!)
