$2000+ for a phone? That’s insane.
The 256GB version of the Pro Max model of iPhones have been just over $2000 since the launch of the iPhone XS Max back in 2018 in Australia, so I'm guessing Apple's foldable will be anywhere from $3000+ to $4000+ depending on storage capacity. And to think, we were once known as "the lucky country"🙄.

This doesn't make sense. 5.5" screen couldn't possible make an iPad mini like display aspect ration... Unless it was actually a tri-fold.

5.5 is very close to iPhone 13 mini size. 3 x iPhone mini side by side is about the perfect width and height of an iPad mini.

If Apple enters the market as the worlds smallest try-fold phone, about the size of the iPhone mini that opens up into an iPad mini wide aspect ratio with 3 folds it will have a much more compelling product than anything else on the market.

THere's little appeal to a giant phone become an even more giant thing. But a small, pocketable phone you can use one handed that opens up into a small tablet for viewing videos and sketching... I'd throw my money at them. That's compelling.

If the unfolded iPhone has the size of an iPad mini ... does this mean that this devices runs both iPhoneOS _and_ iPadOS and switch depending on open or closed usage? Or will these two OSes get re-merged again into an iPhonePadOS?

Has Apple really thought this through, at the time they split iOS into iPhoneOS and iPadOS?
Confusing...

i've always lived a life, torn between the convenience of my phone and the larger more comfortable screen of an iPad mini. I bounce back and forth buying a mini only to return it or stop using it because it's not convenient. it would be really nice to be able to just fold open my phone to get a little bit bigger screen for web browsing, watching something, or video conference. Then fold it back up for more traditional convenient phone usage.

I predict when this new phone will come out, the people who buy it will use the smaller external screen more often for their daily use.
Not me. I only use my iPhone 13 Mini for phone calls and streaming music in my cars, and my iPad Mini for everything else….. texting, emails, Internet browsing, games, etc. I’m literally going to treat this folding phone as a folding iPad I can more easily carry around that can also make phone calls. :D

Ok, lol, you're welcome to believe that. There's been lots of buzz and excellent reviews about several Android folds, especially some of the newer Chinese models, then they get released........and crickets. Those devices are fine, I doubt Apple does anything that "makes the market", the more likely scenario is they pull another AVP, overprice the thing and overestimate sales.
“Excellent reviews” don’t mean much when the average person can’t even name one of those Chinese foldables, let alone find one in a store. The problem isn’t that they’re bad it’s that they’re forgettable. Apple not making the market? Come on. That’s literally what they do. People said the same thing before the iPhone, iPad, the Apple Watch, even AirPods then everyone scrambled to catch up. Apple might price it high but when they do it’s not just a phone it’s an entire ecosystem with support, updates, and resale value. Meanwhile, half these Android folds age like milk after 12 months. So ya I’ll believe it buddy.

There was a time, about 10 years ago, when i thought a foldable like this would be a great ipad replacement. But back then the best ipad was just around 500 usd and my iphone was 200 usd. So i thought if they had released two iPhones on a hinge to create a foldable ipad, i would have totally payed 800 to 1k usd for that…. But now… 2k… 😂 and thats probably gonna be with insufficient storage and without apple care… and those things will break… at this point id rather want to have an iPhone 17 pro that has real external display support. i can carry the small phone but when i need to i can attach it to a display and do real work.

See - I just got settled doing some work and you go and lure me back in to faffing with iPhones.🥲

At least this just forced me to learn a bit more about cinematic cameras and the best way to screenshot in Unreal Engine (what I'm rendering in)

These shots are compared to a 15 pro max and a 12 mini. I didn't model these comparison phones, but I did check their overall dimensions to make sure they were the right size:

And again, disclaimer that this is my pure speculation extrapolated from the rumour mill!

Zac, one last request from me. Could you show us the folding iPhone between the iPhone Pro Max and Mini (just as you already have in this post), but unfolded? I would super appreciate it. Thanks.

No problem. I do hope you don’t pass out from massaging Apple so much.

I doubt that there will be an official merger once again. I’m interested in seeing the software implementation for its foldable, ie perhaps use a custom variant of iPadOS that enforces a single window mode when the clamshell is closed.

Blairh - buddy - I'm never going to get this thing finished if you keep distracting me like this :D

Just kidding, happy to help. This took like 1 minute because the models were already imported into Unreal. I realised looking at this now, I got the scale of the Dynamic Island wrong - but I'm too lazy to keep fiddling with it at the moment.

here you go:

To anyone who didn't see my previous posts, this is the 7.8" unfolded internal screen at a 4:3 aspect ratio compared to a 15 Pro Max and 12 mini. More images of my guesswork can be seen here.

An enormous thank you mate. I super appreciate it. Tremendous work!

All the best with your personal projects. The trailer on YouTube looks awesome! 😀

Apple is going to use some iPhone 17 Air tech for the foldable iPhone, and it could be as thin as 4.8mm when it's opened up. That's even thinner than the 5.1-inch 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which is Apple's thinnest device to date.

5.1-inch thick iPad Pro? Jesus I think you mean mm lol

I would never buy the phone in the picture. That notification bubble indicating there’s an uninstalled iOS update is a bridge too far.

Appreciate the concern, but don’t worry, I pace myself. Gotta leave some energy to help you understand why they’re still miles ahead.
What I understand is that they’re off their game and no indication that anything Earth shattering is changing that anytime soon. They’re in a downward trend and if you can’t see that, don’t know what else to say.
