If the screen remains at 10.5 and the body shrinks and it has symmetrical bezels, I'd have to seriously consider it.

I decided to go with the 12.9" for the first time since it's supposed to have a lot smaller footprint as well as being slightly thinner, which means it should also be lighter. The new one, including the bezels and all, is supposed to be exactly 8.5x11". The 10.5" is fine, but when I have used the 12.9" I like it so much better. It feels more like a computer and has more space for toolbars and things in editing and drawing apps, as well as full sized app multitasking.
Not sure if we're getting an 11" in the same size case or 10.5" in a smaller case. I was leaning towards the former based on rumors and what I think makes more sense in the product mix to separate it from the 9.7", but if it does go up to 11", then that could be a good option that has a bit more space for you without being so big or expensive. Also note that it's likely that the prices will go up this year. I would be pleasantly surprised if it's less than $100, but $50 is a minimum and $100-150 is more likely. We will know all the answers soon enough!

As you wrote, The dimensions of the new 12.9” with the slimmer bezels will be 8.5” x 11”. The dimensions of the current 12.9” is 8.68” x 12”....so significantly smaller height wise. The current 10.5” is 6.8” x 9.8” but the upcoming one will increase the screen size to 11” and will be 7” x 9.7”....so slightly wider and slightly shorter(basically same size).
As an artist who travels a lot, I was leaning towards the 10.5” before, and welcome the slight increase in screen size to 11”. The current 12.9” has an amazing screen, but the physical size was just too cumbersome to carry around. I am curious if the new smaller sized 12.9” will feel more portable. I may have to actually wait to see them in person now before ordering.

12.9 will be what i buy hopefully tomorrow lol...think it will be smaller in the hand and be my true laptop replacement as plan to get smart keyboard too.

I just hope it fits in my bag. I bought a bag last year from Tenba for the 10.5" since it didn't fit my little Incase bag any more, but then I switched jobs and had to carry a MBP around so I bought an even bigger version of the same bag that has a 15" MBP pocket and an iPad pocket on the side of the MBP pocket that is vertically oriented. I just put a piece of paper in that pocket and it fits width wise with a small amount of room to spare, but height wise it sticks out almost an inch, or around 1/4" past the top of the bigger bag it is in, which might make it vulnerable to impacts. IDK. It's close. Might have someone sew it in another orientation. I don't want to have to buy another expensive bag—and IDK if they even make bags that would fit that and a MBP since it's usually one or the other, but I much prefer taking the iPad to meetings across campus and around town. Hopefully Apple sells their slim leather cases again and that will be good enough.

A good way to visualize it is to just look at an 8 1/2 x 11 note pad. That’s the exact size of the new 12.9” iPad Pro supposedly.
i plan on using my 12.9 for reading music -- both practice and performance, using a bluetooth page turning pedal. the 12.9 should allow me to have brighter music, the same size (or larger if cropped and turned landscape), which i hope will make it easier to read/play, using the apple pencil for notations. using forScore app) i purchased mine a couple of days ago when I learned that the 3.5 phono plug was gone -- too many headphones and didn't want an adapter.

I’ve been a 12.9 user since they launched and upgraded to the second-gen when it was released. I really like the 12.9 screen size but the physical size of the device is a little encumbering.
My hobby is table-top roleplaying and many rulebooks are now available in PDF format, so the big screen was awesome for one of my main use-cases (reading larger format books). For comparison, here is the 12.9 next to the same book in dead-tree format:
I can now carry pretty much my whole library with me where ever I go (which is great as I travel a lot for work and like to read of an evening).
I recently bought myself a Smart Keyboard and it really makes the 12.9 Pro into a powerhouse for tasks that I would normally switch to a laptop for, like document writing. It adds a little bulk but is still quite portable and vastly more portable than a typical laptop.
I’ll be switching to the new 12.9 this year. The same screen in a slightly smaller chassis would be perfect for me.

No, the Smart Connector is in a different place so the keyboard definitely won’t work. The sides are now flat, too, where as previously they were curved, so I doubt any old attachments / covers will work.
