Size for Scratch Drive

I am going to buy a 1Tb ext. hd with fw800 and make a partition for Scratch Drive
I do SD and sometimes HD. how large is the Scratch Drive enough?
and is it ok to render to the same drive with the Scratch Drive?

I have my scratch drive, captured footage and render files (everything) on one 1TB external drive. Some say it's good to have a couple drives for your scratch and one for other stuff but it's worked fine for me for 2 years.😉
