Vaporware. Apple introduces something, tells you to buy a device that will be able to do it, removes feature. I don't really care about this particular feature, but Apple's new thing of trying to sell you stuff that doensn't exist yet is despicable.

Until project managers realize that software is large, complex, and that writing code is way more work than "writing an email" things will never change. Engineers get overridden by MBAs because MBAs have this idea in their head that no one but them knows how to manage projects.

The yearly releases are just too much for how complex software is getting.

Why does tech writing use "drop" with opposite meanings? It can mean either cancel or release. Apple drops AirPower (cancel). Apple drops new iPad Pros (release). I remember it didn't use to be this way...say, 20 years ago? Before that, it might be used in music, as in so-and-so just dropped a new single.

EDIT: Oh, at least ChatGPT thinks I am right: "This usage likely started in the hip-hop world, where "dropping a new track" had the energetic connotation of unleashing it onto the world. In tech, this dual meaning has gradually caught on, especially as tech companies and media increasingly adopt pop culture language."

EDIT 2: I have seen tech writing use "drop" and "release" to mean "announced" too. Apple "drops" XYZ, meaning they announced it today and will be available in 4 to 6 months. That's also annoying.

Yes, the kids don't use words properly and then it spills over into the rest of society.

If only everyone listened to their English teachers as carefully as we did!

Why is "it's the children who are wrong" becoming my favorite meme?

All of the Apple Intelligence features have been less than underwhelming, venturing into terrible territory. I don’t need summaries for notifications that are already succinct enough, generative AI has a place but making images is a gimmick and I don’t need AI to write a text out for me.

Even more broadly with the iPhone 16 PM, I can’t stand the camera control button as where it is it’s too easy to accidentally press since that’s where the phone is gripped from, and coming from the 13 PM I really don’t like the action button.
It feels like throwing stuff at the wall because they’re out of ideas.
I have both phones (one is my work phone) and I couldn’t agree more. The camera control button is worthless to me and I’d rather use the on-screen controls because they are more precise. The 16 PM I have from work has all but confirmed I’m not buying another iPhone to replace my 13 PM

If they purchased Pixelmator then they can include ai functions into it that allow you with the Apple Pencil to draw something and have the AI turn your strokes into professional looking sketches. If that function already existed on the phone it wouldn't be thing to show off in a keynote and it wouldn't sell any pencils.

That style must have been more challenging to train a LoRA model to preproduce.

Interesting to note that, since Apple Intelligence is downloaded separately from the OS, it's reasonable to think they could update it independently of the OS. We could see this style come at a later date quietly in the background.

Decades from now there will be business classes teaching about this boondoggle
Go to a decent business school and you won't have to wait decades. There are multiple Apple case studies and they get updated regularly.

Why does Apple even bother? Do it right or don't do it.
This is done in DrawThings - a free app on the Apple store.

Just downloaded and tried that program. It is pretty impressive.

Sherlocked in 2 years.

[I seriously meant it when I said the program is impressive. But, full disclosure ... the poor girl in the first image I generated only had three fingers and no thumb.]

Image Playground’s advantage lies in its on-device operation. Other than this, it’s been pretty dookie so far. I’m astounded at how far behind the results are, as someone who was eager to use. Genmoji dachshunds are the only reason I haven’t deleted the app.

LOL you're complaining about a pre-beta.

Yeah, the trolls are out. As if the entire category isn't moving forward at record speed and with very few actual use scenarios. Remember when Edison controlled motion pictures? Boy that studio was WAY ahead. Until they were dissolved.

Quick start guide: Go into the Model menu and download something called Flux [schnell]. If you only have 8 GB of ram, get the 8 bit version. Then set the "Steps" slider to 4. (This needs to be 15-30 for other models.)

These generators need a ton of learning and exploration to get controllable results. The DrawThings discord helps.

The amazing thing about DrawThings is that it is just one guy programing this! He has accomplished so much more than Apple has, and faster. I fear that Apple's profitability is masking severe internal dysfunction.

Several English words have opposite meanings. "Sanction" is either a penalty for doing something or an authorization to do something. "Cleave" means to split apart or stick together. And then there's "sick".....

And 'literally' for more and more Americans.

Ugg. That one is particularly painful because there is simply no other simple way to describe the correct meaning of the word:

"The product is literally flying off the shelves!"
"The product is flying off the shelves!"

There is no difference at all in the meaning of these two sentences, given the way the former is so often used. But you actually can't use the first sentence with the correct meaning of literally, because everyone would assume you meant figuratively. So the word has become useless. It never means anything.

As if that's worth a damn!!

(I understand the point you're trying to make but still can't get my head around why, given its terrible accuracy rates, people act like ChatGPT is some kind of reliable authority.)

It's really annoying how misused and overused it is.

It's mostly (ab)used for emphasis now.

All these AI-generated images are so boring and dumb. Uninspired, devoid of style and finesse, absolutely bland. They have zero practical use, even as simple illustrations. No one will ever feel genuine awe at something created by AI. It's a feature that you try once and then never use again, just like Memoji. Waste of time of whoever worked on this.

I have no idea why Apple is doing this. Obviously they're trying to match feature set of Google Photos and Samsung's Gallery... but you'll never be on top by following suit and doing what everyone else does.

Guess it's too late for them to back out and suddenly change stance on generative AI to the right one.

Just another "Steve Jobs would've never" moment.

You cratered most of my day yesterday and probably the rest of my weekend by pointing me at this program. I've been fixated on the LLM side of AI, running different models locally for the last year. I had ignored image generation except for playing with DALLE a couple of times. Now, that I realize I can run image generation locally, I've got to dig into that tech. Thanks for the pointer.

Oh, and now I completely sympathize with your original comment about Apple doing it right or not bothering. What Apple is doing right now, though, is probably good and safe enough for children and corporate marketing drones.
