Have ANY of these off-cycle product rumors EVER come true? One iPhone and one iPad per year has been the unbroken pattern, yet the rumors persist despite NEVER coming to fruition.

So, this will be thinner, lighter, and "perform" better.

Similar to the iPad 2 update (Thinner, lighter and faster).

My guess is that this iPad will be released next year. With a new thinner form factor, A6 and better battery life.

It just doesn't make sense for Apple to ditch the iPad 3 right before the holiday season when it hasn't had a holiday run yet. Now it could be possible if Apple wants to move to the same release cycle for iPad/iPhone/iPod, but I think that is a bad idea for them.

Mainly because most people are not going to line up and buy a new iPhone and iPad at the same time, but put a few months between and a lot will end up buying both because of their lull in purchasing.

With the greatest of respect, I get a little annoyed when people cite Digitimes as having 'accurate rumours' in the past. I mean, it's a Retina Display on a MacBook. They did it with the iPhone, then with the iPad. Not to mention all the high-resolution icons leaked in Mountain Lion & Lion. And this is Apple; they're quite obviously going to try to make a laptop thinner.

What I'm trying to say is that anything they've accurately reported has been nothing short of common-sense. Anything vaguely 'out there' that they've suggested has almost never happened.

I'd be willing to suggest that most people on MR are better at speculating about what Apple will do next.

This. The small portion of rumors Digitimes has gotten right, have always been reiterated by other sources. If you look at claims/rumors unique to them, they have been wrong virtually 100% of the time. Any rumor that stems from them, I would take with a bucket-full of salt.

Seriously?

I just bought a new 64 GB iPad 3 and they want to come out with a new one? This is just like when Apple started releasing new iPods in short intervals of time. I am extremely upset with this decision by Apple

Why are you upset?

This is just an unfounded rumor. Since you apparently have not read any of the other comments in this thread or any other thread about a rumor from Digitimes, I will summarize.

Digitimes is garbage, and their assumptions are almost always wrong.

Meaning, what was written here is very likely not going to happen. Which makes sense since it's pretty much the opposite of what Apple has previously done.

You have made yourself mad for no plausible reason.

I don't think this is very likely and i would actually prefer Apple wait and present a massive update for the next generation iPad until something big is ready.

I'd hold out for "late 2012", like the Superdish game is in "late January" now.

Apple will want the grinders in their battle station fully operational AHEAD of the January announcement. They might even try to get to brand standard and have them "for day one sale". iPad is a mainline product now. You don't make your public wait 2-3 months to get one. Apple wants those tills ringing.. Not People waiting for announced products to show up.

Apple updated the iPad2. I don't see why that shouldn't do a similar update for the New iPad... improved efficiency, but with the same performance. I don't think IGZO dislplays look significantly different than current screens.

Maybe they are just misinterpreting 7" iPad rumors. Still, the 3rd gen iPad needs all of these improvements. It's a brute force effort to achieve specs in many, many ways.

With 32/28nm processes, IGZO displays, in-cell technology and Gorilla Glass 2, Apple has a lot of opportunities to slim down the thickness, weight and power profile for the next iPad.

I also hope they're going to push the envelope on things like through silicon vias to get some crazy memory bandwidth for their mobile CPUs and GPUs. The future is exciting in the mobile space.

Second that.

I bet this year's new iPad must've been a bit of a disappointment for Apple. They were forced to compromise a lot and I bet it's not doing them any good as far as their margins on it.

Retina w/o IGZO, hence 2 LED BLU, 45nm CPU with external RAM chips and almost double the silicon area due to GPU. This all takes it's toll on battery which needs to be almost double the capacity of iPad2, adding to weight & thickness, heat and especially cost.

I bet we'll see the next revision totting lower power IGZO, possibly with in-cell touch, 32nm Samsung made CPU and weight & thickness coming down to or bellow iPad2. I think that'd allow for price to come down to $399 for 9.7" Retina iPad. Somehow I don't think they'll keep on making the current 3rd gen iPad as the new design ought to be significantly cheaper to make, rather keep the iPad2 around for another year, possibly further discounted. The mini iPad then could land at or bellow $249 and be a very strong competition to the latest crop of $200 7" tablets coming in from all angles.

Digitimes or not, it makes sense that this will happen. Apple can do a quiet refresh with IGZO. They can use the same enclosure. They won't have to announce anything. Some people will just notice that their new iPad is a tiny bit lighter and doesn't get warm.

Also, if the dual backlight is part of the cause of why there are so many unevenly lit and colored new iPads, this is another win.

Don't forget, the current iPad 2 you can buy is a better iPad 2 because of the new SoC. It gets significantly better battery life. Apple didn't announce this upgrade. It was up to the customer to discover it.

There's no reason to think Apple wouldn't switch screen technologies mid-cycle if they are able to do so, especially when the screen it would replace led to so many compromises with the product.

I agree.

It would be illogical for Apple to continue using the current screen/battery setup for another six months if a better solution was available now. It would save them money and improve the user experience (a cooler, slightly lighter iPad that takes 2-3 hours less than the current model to charge).

However, two things may stop them from doing a mid-cycle upgrade:

1) Potential backlash from current iPad 3 owners.
2) Something to hold back for next year's iPad model.

IGZO is a rumor for the iPad mini, was a rumor for the iPad 3 and is now a rumor for a revised iPad 3.

So this rumor is likely garbage. I could see it being used in the next model but I don't see it being used as a revision, can't imagine them just revising it without using it as a selling point for a new model.

I would like that! I gave back my new iPad because I thought it made too many compromises.

Does IGZO have no correlation with better colors, contrast, or brightness in the sun?

Updated iPad

so if the update iPad comes on october 2012, cause of the over-heating problems will apple allow the new iPad users to exchange for free..?? since i bought my iPad last month...:(

:apple:-ur kidding me.

Agreed. Especially, how do you want to offset your costs to develop the New iPad if your cycle is not even roughly one year? Also, there is a certain number of iPad which will fail for what ever reason (e.g. accidental drop) and are covered with AppleCare+ and if the cycle is so short, you would have to replace them with a new product because you don't stash them in big numbers. That eats away from the adoption rate of the new product because some or many people will switch without using AppleCare+ but pay full price. Not to mention that faster cycles is more stress on enginees etc. There is also no significant competition that makes this a need right now. If that is an issue, it's on the iPhone. Faster cycles would help there because there is competition and the competition actually does well with sales, beating Apple with one or the other stats. I know, there are arguments against that but the current iPhone does not the highest resolution per square inch or the brightest display or whatever. There might or might not be one product to do everything better - that is just interpretation - but the core of the thought is, revamping the iPhone faster would make ten times more sense than the iPad.

Not intrinsically. It's about doing more with less. Theoretically if more power was all it took to improve these metrics, an IGZO display would be better quality at a given power level, but that's not really the goal. iPad displays are already very high quality. It's about reducing their power, weight and thickness now.

Overheating problem? Consumers Union among others debunked that one a long time ago. Nice try - not

Bob has very little to do with manufacturing. An ME and or industrial engineer is in charge of that.

These are mid production design changes. Not issues with QC/production. So, it is engineering. The iPad 3 should never have been shipped with 2 light bars and batteries that are too large, and give off too much heat.

Bob is tired. I'll bet he loved glueing those batteries in place inside Jonny's new MBP Retina Design.

It's obvious the iPad 3 was rushed. APPL should have waited for the new screens that are being introduced with 1 light bar and smaller batteries.:apple:
