Think about it.

If they increase the size of the screen (in width as the iPhone 5 already had a height increase) then there's two options:

1) They will increase the number of pixels displayed to something like 1136 x 700. This would make almost ALL apps incompatible. Way to piss off the devs that are already having to update for iOS 7.

2) They DECREASE the density of the screen to keep the same number of pixels over the larger area. This would result in a less than Retina quality screen. Not happening.

Calling BS on this too.

Or they give the retina a boost in DPI (2.5 or 3X). If you use an HTC one you can see that an increase in DPI can still make a visual difference.

I actually believe needs to go up in size...eventually.

Sales of the iPhone 5 are still going strong, primarily because new smartphone buyers wanting in on the Apple ecosystem have no other choice.

Yes. There is a report in todays WSJ, and other places online, suggesting growth in smartphone sales in general, i.e., iPhone and Android, is tapering off because the dearth of new exciting hardware features have made it a less compelling proffer to upgrade. The numbers confirm this with both disapointing Galaxy 4 S sales and flat iPhone 5 sales.

Of course Samsung pushed out the larger screen Note and Galaxy as a way to differentiate itself from the iPhone. But that's played out now. It seems to me Apple, by bidding its time on size, has the edge to reinvigorate growth by pushing out a larger size iPhone in addition to the current 4" and a low cost iPhone, if that rumor comes to pass.

I don't see this happening for the 5s, maybe the next model.

Just email me when the new iPhone is released. :apple:

Far from it, Tiger. It's the tick-tock cycle. Intel do it; new gen one year, upgrade that gen the next, and then go to a new gen the following year.

And Apple have been doing it with the iPhone since its inception.

  • Original iPhone
  • iPhone 3G (Added 3G, new look)
  • 3GS - Updated internals
  • iPhone 4 (new look)
  • 4S - updated internals
  • 5 (new look)
  • 5S - updated internals

The only exception to this rule is the original iPhone & the iPhone 3G; IMO that's mainly because the step between the two was so huge, and I think they learnt so much in the first year of production & design that they knew they could make it considerably thinner, lighter and better designed with the 3G.

So it's not something new, it's Apple's phone cycle.

It's not only Apple. Can you think of a company that doesn't actually make incremental design changes every alternate year? It looks like Samsung, HTC, sony, nexus phones, and stuff like that seem to have only incremental design changes.

Still on an iPhone 4, Apple is giving NO incentive to upgrade, but all the incentive in the world to jump ship to Android. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is delivering most of what I want in a phone.

and what might those incentives be? Free phones with lousy contracts?!?!?!

wait..don't tell me...customization

Consider IGZO
If we add the rumors together then it does add up. IGZO allows for a much smaller bezel. What do you do with the extra space? Leave it blank or make it usable space? We know IGZO is much thinner too, allowing for thinner designs. So add a bigger battery or leave it the same size? We already know the 5s is getting a bigger battery.

Notice how the new mini will also get "an almost bezel free look"
My Droid M is almost as wide as the iPhone 5 and it carries a 4.3 display.

So I say it is VERY Likely. Larger screen, longer lasting battery. And makes the iPhone 5S all the improvement worth upgrading too.

I expect the thinner IZGO screen was intended for use in the iP5 given the beveled styling and slightly awkward proud screen from a side-on profile. This will probably be a natural change on the 5S whatever size it may be.

somebody (tim, craig, jonny) listen! make the bigger screen lower res and include it in the 'cheap' iphone! nice trade-off - you can experiment a bit with the 'cheap' one - and if bigger screen is popular - than increase your 'high end' iphone!!

really, someone listen please … and pay me 'cause i make so much sense!

As we know:
1. Apple historically offers last years model with less flash at a lower price.
2. The new phone will alternate every year between a spec bump and a new model phone.
I don't know what the historical uptake rate is for last years model at the discounted price is, but I know those who are obsessed with have the latest and can afford it, will always buy the new model every two years.

Recently announced plans from carriers allow customers to upgrade every year does two things.
1. Passes the subsidy burden on to the customer.
2. Relieves the pressure on Apple at releasing a revolutionary product every two years.
Apple is also rumored to be planing it's own in store upgrade/trade-in plan.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but perhaps Apple is doing two things:
1. Slight spec bump on last years model for the carriers to justify additional monthly fees on a "new every year plan."
2. A completely new (larger) phone under a 2 year contract or out of contract full price.

This seems like it will accomplish several things.
1. Make the carriers more profitable by shifting the subsidy burden to the customer.
2. Allows Apple to maintain a premium on last years phone.
3. Allows Apple to shift more customers (sooner) to the new model phone to increase volume and lower manufacturing costs.
4. Allows the carriers and Apple to re-sell the trade-in phones to cut the independents and customer re-sales out of the action.

After all, the iPhone is Apples bread and butter.

Just a thought....

Personally I think a 4 and 4.3 are too close in size. I think (IMHO) if they are doing a 4 budget or whatever that the premium would/should be around 4.7. Seems if you wanted to give choice of a bigger screen you'd want something more along the lines of the HTC One or S4 AND the iPhone5. That way you now have both sided of the coin locked down. I think a 4.7 (around the size of the HTC) would sell like CRAZY!!! And for those who don't want the 4.7 there is the iPhone budget. Kind of like the iPad and iPad Mini. The iPhone and the iPhone Mini

The idea is that we're getting ever closer to a new iPhone release, and these rumors tend to be a little more rampant around new iPhone releases. The new Mac Pro is coming, I'm sure we'll be flooded with those stories soon enough!

Good point, and I hope so. The AppleCare for my three year old "current gen" Mac Pro5,1 runs out in October, and I tend to get nervous without it. It also brings in more money when sold, buyers like the ability to have it checked out when they receive the unit. Just hoping the pricing isn't too far off from current models, upgrading usually cost ~$500 after selling my system. I have the sense that won't be the case.

But you will, right?

The iOS ecosystem is far too valuable.

I can't imagine there were many developers who didn't make the switch to Retina or to 16:9 for the iPhone 5 and new iPod Touch.

Yeah I will, but this is a pain. At least the new Auto Layouts helps a little but this is now 6 different resolutions I have to account for if my math is correct

I wish this rumor were true. I still think 4.3 inch is about the ideal size for a smartphone. 4.5 is about the largest I would ever want to go.

The reason I think this rumor might be possible is that going to 4.3 isn't going to drop the pixel density that much which means that developers wouldn't have update their apps like they would have to with a much larger phone. Also Apple has been known to make last minute changes in the past.

I can't speak for everyone else but the larger screen is what I want the most when it comes to the physical features of the phone. Everything else I want is software features. The hardware isn't that big of a selling point for me anymore. The more powerful these phones become the quicker they drain through the batteries.

agree.

so, IGZO should be the key here.

No it's not. IGZO is the key for larger panels but for the phones we already have all sorts of super high density phone displays with small bezels. IGZO is a significant technology but its importance seems to have reached a mythical stature in an unwarranted way for some.

Yeah... I feel bad for devs sometimes. Apple's pixel-perfect rules must get annoying. But their apps really do look great.

Do you think Apple will ever have resolution-independence?

Or will apps have hard-coded pixel dimensions forever?

in order to stay competitive regarding screen size, it needs to be 4.7 inch. I've moved from an iPhone 5 to HTC One and its screen size (4.7) is excellent while maintaining portability.

They have made some incredible additions to the latest SDK. With a new text kit that handles font sizes extremely well plus the autolayout enhancements it does lend itself to handling different screen sizes.

However I still don't think its going to happen.
