Makes sense, my wife does not want a phone bigger than the iPhone 5S and I would think she is not alone. Also, I would think Apple wants to offer a phone of this size with the ability to use Apple Pay. Not everyone is going to go out and buy a iPhone 5S along with a Apple Watch.

This is exactly what should happen, both with the iPhone and the iPad:

iPhone S - Small, 4"
iPhone M - Medium, 4.7"
iPhone L - Large, 5.5"

iPad S - Small, 7.9"
iPad M - Medium, 9.7"
iPad L - Large, 12.2"

Then anyone can choose a size. Just so long as they don't skimp on the features in each model.

Not sure if Apple will do it, but it would make a lot of sense - they sell 3 sizes of laptop screen so why not do the same with iPhone and iPad?

I have previously always upgraded my phone for each non-S update, but have so far stuck with my 5 because I prefer the screen size. I'd definitely go for a 4" handset with iPhone 6 internals (and I'm male, with reasonably large hands)

I want one

I sure hope so, that is exactly what I want. The 5S weighs 112gm and the 6 weighs 132gm. A 4" 6S should weigh < 100gm.

Why do some people think that it is a good idea to force on others what they want themselves instead of giving people what they want?

IMHO the line-up is screaming out for a smaller sized iPhone. The iPhone 6 is really pushing it for me size-wise, so I'd likely choose a smaller one next time if it was available, just so long as it wasn't too hobbled in order to up-sell...

Indeed. It's just a pity the naming probably won't be consistent.

It seems as though Apple are moving away slightly form the "i" branded products, i.e. Apple Watch and Apple Pay.

We may yet see Apple Phone, Apple Pad, Apple Tunes...

This isn't sketchy -- this is obvious. Apple will come out with a 6c, which has the innards of the 5s.

While that would make sense as the $450 "budget" model for the next release round, that doesn't actually match the 5C's release. It used only 1 generation old innards and was $550 vs. the flagship $650 base.

To call it a 6C, it should use the A8 innards of the current iPhone 6, cost $550, and be released alongside a 6S using A9 innards for $650.

Yeah, keep all the different mini air plus sizes coming, Apple, until finding and buying the right Apple product for you becomes as difficult, time-consuming and painful as from other companies... Apple should maybe re-read the chapter in the Steve Jobs biography describing how he radically tightening the confusing, unfocussed portfolio after joining the company again.

Steve Jobs was referring to Apple's endless string of models that made up the Performa line, for instance.

30 models in five years is absolutely ridiculous and confusing.

After Steve came back to Apple... he cleaned up the product line considerably.

However... offering 3 sizes of phones and 2 sizes of tablets is NOT as confusing as you're making it out to be.

Apple sold something like 100 million 4" iPhones this year... while that was the only "choice", you can't tell me that there's no market for them. Even if only 25% of users want a "smaller" 4" phone, that's still 25 million phones. That's a market well large enough to justify a top of the line 4" iPhone.

For the millionth time, not everyone needs a big screen. I want a phone that fits comfortably in my hand and pocket, makes phone calls, has the latest bells and whistles. I don't need to operate my office/life from my phone. I understand some do, and a big screen is useful for that, but there are still tons of people who want a "small" phone.

I would bet there will be a 6C this coming Fall. Would be VERY surprised if not.

I would do 4" for people who don't want a large device to carry around. I would do 5" for the "sweet spot" IMO, and 5.5" for those who want a large screen. Keep the C model as a 4" version, and use that as a "hobby." But I would boost the 4.7" to 5".
