I for one like skeumorphism as long as it's functional.
The shredding on Passbook is kindda great I thought...the decorative design on game centre and iCal however, is not.
on iBooks, skumorphism adds to the experience. so does notes.
so it really depends where it's placed. but i think skeumorphism just for the sake of the look (as opposed to enhancing the experience) isn't great.

Hmm... I'd figure more character would make it easier for people with bad vision to use....

Not really, but a lot of people who have good eyesight seem to think so. One need only look at the document templates in MS Office to get an idea of how people inadvertently make life harder for those with visual impairments.....

What's so wrong about skeuomorphism?

People just keep complaining about skeuomorphism on iOS. They crucify Forstall and keep saying that Apple should move to flat design instead.

But to be honest I fail to see what makes skeuomorphism so bad for the end user. I know that it might be "ugly" for some people (which is weird, since the entire purpose of skeuomorphism on iOS is to give a nice visual touch–and it certainly looks more beautiful than flat design), but how is this aspect that terrible?

It's not that skeuomorphism on it's own is bad... it's that, more often than not, it's added for no reason, wastes time, and breaks up design consistency.

I'd much rather have clean, consistent designs then be forced to look at the Game Center or the stupid 'paper shredder' animation in Passbook.

Skeuomorphism isn't bad...its bad when it get forcefully incorporated with everything and makes it harder to use.

Easiest example is the Podcast app.

I think the paper shredder animation is a nice addition to the app.

The Podcast app is where I think it goes too far, it's metaphors make the app harder to understand, not easier.
