Hopefully now that Jony Ive has absolute control over UI design and Human Interface, we will see the same tick-tock product design strategy that he does with hardware but now with iOS and OS X (redesign/refresh every other year and "S" updates in between)

As someone said it before, it's better to have to design gradually evolve over a few updates rather than just let it go completely stale and then do a radical redesign all at once.

Better approach would be to stagger hardware-software tick-tock,
S-model: new iOS design and upgrade hardware
non-S model: fine-tune iOS/new features but the same design and new hardware design

I really hope that they do that. It would be the best way to keep the hardware and software up to date.

Unfortunately Skeuomorphism does not stand the test of time so it's not very practical.

I just find it funny that the "save" icon in most apps is still a 3.5" floppy disk. Most teens don't even know what a floppy disk is they just know the icon represents save.

Same goes with the phone app icon. Who actually has that type of telephone in their house? none of us.

Actually, I have a (working) roatery style telephone on the wall next to my iMac that was installed in my house in 1983. I occasionally still use it :p

Do you know how ridiculous it would be to redesign the OS every 2 years?

The only reason for a redesign is it the design doesn't match their philosophy or doesn't function well with whatever they want to add.

eh, my corded phone would like a talk w/ you. I always have one since they will work even in a power outage thanks to the small power they use from the telephone lines that are always on.

They didn't say redesign, just a big update with lots of new features like iOS 5.

The design refreshes would not be a drastic departure or anything. Just stuff like new and refined UI elements, new apps and functionalities, etc. It would be visual and functional changes that would fit in with their new design direction and philosophy. That way, iOS would be kept fresh.

Every year in between would focus more on performance and overall polishing of the OS.

Regardless, it is not a good representation for a digital app on a smartphone.

Oh yea? My smoke signals will out last your corded phone.

I will let you talk to the mail, camera, notes app to name a few on the iphone. , hell all the save icon buttons in almost all computer applications. You are wrong deal w it.

Actually, if you ever have made them or just went camping and lighted a campfire you would know that is incorrect.

I hate Minimaluminiumalism :D I love skeuomorphism, I still have ios 6 on my iphone 4 and it's going strong.

That just proves my point that the icons are outdated though...

Is it me or does the old notes look a lot like samsungs? Did they steal that design from apple??

Not to randomly bump a thread but I just don't understand what the purpose is of completely wiping the entire operating system of all textures except for that ugly white one in the Notes and the Reminders apps.

The only reason I can think of keeping it is that it might make it more clear to the user that he/she is scrolling in the Notes app, but honestly there are other ways of doing that (like the scroll indicator that also appears on the right). I know on my Mac, I replaced the background of the Notes app with a plain white file and plan on doing the same for the ugly, pointless textures in Reminders (though that will be a bit harder).

Most teens know what a floppy disk is, just like we know what a record is, or what a really old phone looks like, or old radios in cars. Some things become an icon for what is was even though everyone now uses its successors.

The "save" icon floppy has been a windows staple since day 1, like steering wheel on the left in the US. Coming up with a picture to fit inside an icon that represents some action is not all that easy where the action is universally represented.

Sometimes "save" is represented by a downward arrow with a horizontal line underneath.

to me a main issue with the iOS7 design in something like Notes is the lake of decent Hierarchy. Previously (and possibly simply due to skeuomorphism) the screen could be easily scanned and understood. Same way with the old Reminders.

The new game of removing "unwanted" textures and buttons and simply relying on some color and subtle typography bumps make it harder to discern at a glance.

Oh, and the Camera App Icon—HORRIBLE. because it easily does video too and showing a lens was much nicer...showing a SLR-style camera is not the greatest.

There are plenty of DSLRs that do video too.....

Huh? My cell phone will still work during a power outage....because, you know, it's not connected to the wall and runs on a battery....

That is until the battery runs out and/or the cell network gets overloaded or something like that (not necessarily related to the power outage, but could be, depending on the reason why the power might be out).
