What's taking Skype so long to come onto the iPhone?
Fring is nearly unusuable for the fact of waiting like 5min to be able to make skype-calls alone and the sound quality is poor. And i'm surprised Skype is already available for other mobile phones but still not on the iPhone.

    Any ideas?

I'm sure it's on their radar. Bit surprised it's taken so long.

I haven't had any problems with Fring though. Love it. :)

    It's called Fring.

Search for it in the App Store

You probably haven't even read my post. I 'said' i don't like Fring's 5min wait to make skype calls or the audio quality.

My apologies. I saw "What's taking Skype so long" so I posted. Really should have read the whole thing.

I have no idea what's taking them. How about shooting them an email?

a lot of people have been asking the same thing on skype's own forum since firmware 2.0 came out and there had been zero response from skype to suggest they are even working on it. they probably are, at least I hope because fring is definitely a big disappointment so far. I also tried out PennyTel and although it's very cheap, call quality is poor as well. The only usable VOIP on the iphone is Truphone. Rate is higher than skype but call quality is a little better and it's actually usable.
Not sure what happened to iCall either...

What do you mean by the '5min wait to make skype calls'?

when you first you open Fring, you can't immediately place a skype call. It seems it takes a long while for Fring to establish a server connection with skype in order for skype calls to go through, often it can be as long as 5 min or more.
I usually look at the status of the buddy icons to know whether a successful login to skype is established.

Thanks, I'm curious about this because I haven't been able to get my Skype contacts to even show up in fring. Do you have to leave fring open for minutes just to have the contacts appear?

    Try pennytel.

Its a joy to use and even cheaper and also more powerful than skype.

The online account summary is updated instantly so you can see exactly the number you called with call times.

With wifi its 8c untimed to most places in the world and with 3G its equivalent to a 10c /min (timed per second not per 30 seconds) mobile call again to anywhere in the world (OK there is also the equivalent to an 8c flag fall)

Since I found pennytel I know longer use skype even when I am at home and next to my PC -our logitec cordless skype phone in now redundant.

Agree Fring with skype is unuseable.

OK its not chat but for real phone calls pennytel is unbeatable.

I tried PennyTel and the call quality is very poor as well, it's basically unusable. I tried to send SMS through PennyTel, did not work at all. This is after waiting about a week to get credit card validated twice with them.
I basically just threw money away.

Well I have had no problem with Fring

But I primarily use Truphone. I've used it from Argentina, Australia, Thailand, Japan, Spain, South Africa... All this month with no problem!

Fring is a big disappointment. I use iconnect here in the SIP settings of Fring and that too is usless. Besides a major bug for me is:

    a) Robotic sound when listening to fring. Its probably the 2.1 upgrade as the same robitic sound is evident when listening to voicemails.
    b) No Bluetooth.
    c) Delaaay in sound quality.

VOIP's have progressed so much. Google talk!! but not having apps to support it is a sad testament to the iphone's potential

I gave up using Fring almost immediately because the sound quality was so poor--there is a real lag/echo, which Fring even acknowledges in its forums. Forget Pennytel--they have the most idiotic system for validating your credit card which requires you to find out the exchange rate in $AUS from your bank at the time Pennytel posts a very small trial charge. I gave up after I realized my time was more important that being on hold with Bank of America--and in the end even it couldn't tell me what the rate was at the time of the charge. Many of the comments on the App store are withering for the same reason. Complete frustration. iCall has submitted its promising app to Apple--but some three weeks later it still hasn't been approved. Jajah announced in April that they would have a VOIP app ready soon after the 3G announced, but no word at all since then.
