You can FaceTime with people outside of Apple….
YOU CAN?!? Tell me how I really could use that ability
(Family except for one is on iPhones/Macs. We’ve been using third party video chat services which don’t hold a candle to FaceTime.)

So what program/app do Apple people use most for video calls to those outside the Apple ecosystem these days? I have Microsoft Teams to talk to one or two professionals I have working for me. But, other than that, it’s pretty much just regular phone calls to non-Apple people and FaceTime for those in the ecosystem.
In my small org we are too cheap to get enterprise Office anything. So no Teams for us. That leaves Zoom for some and FaceTime for others. sometimes Google Meet. Pickings are slim yet well-featured.

I used Skype occasionally to make calls from the UK to mobiles/landlines in Europe. It was very cheap and the call quality was very good. I now use 'Viber Out' on my Mac, a bit more expensive but the call quality not on par compared to Skype although still useable.

As a Microsoft Teams admin, I am confident that the Skype sunset was planned out using the knowledge that Teams is an excellent strategic move for Microsoft, both now and the future.

Microsoft is sadly mistaken. Teams is a tragic embarrassment, and will go the way of Lotus Notes if they fail to correct this garbage mess of a product. My user community sees Teams as an annoying, unreliable, but necessary product.

Once messaging apps got the ability to do video calls, that was pretty much it for Skype. Especially with Facebook Messenger's arrival even before Zoom became really popular in 2020.

I used it a lot when I emigrated and Facetime, etc. was not available. I still have $50 of credit left. Will use the offered dial pad if I need to call an international landline. The Skype app is already gone from my iPhone.

I have to use Teams at work, but it is overall a terrible application. Try to avoid it is much as I can.

It was still great for VoIP calls until the day it died. I would just topped up £10 and it would last for ages. Anyone know a good alternative that's pay-as-you-go instead of a subscription?

Another prime example of Microsoft touching something and having it turn to Cr$p. In the early 2000s, it was a lightweight, efficient app and they bloated it and did poorly integrations with other MS apps.

Sad to see Skype shutdown. It was a great service. Now happy with FaceTime.

$8B for skype and $7B for Nokia, $15B down the drain 🤣

On a more serious note, check out threema for a privacy friendly alternative for corporates.

I used Skype because I need to call relatives without internet and just a landline. Recently I tried Yolla which works fairly well and has a pay as you go option. Not as good as Skype was though.

I'm still not sure why didn't Microsoft do something with Skype since it had name and brand recognition, instead of pivoting to Teams which is becoming more and more bloated.

I wonder if this only happens if you perform the latest update (as I did on my Mac).
On my phone I'm on 8.138.0.213 and it's still working fine.

I do have another £6-7 credit left, not sure if that makes any difference.

Thankfully app autoupdate was turned off on my second iPhone I can confirm the older version still works. If you update Skype it will redirect you to Teams.

Skype was doomed as soon as it fell on Microsoft hands. Even the original developers regretted selling it to them and said Google would have been a more appropriate choice.

You said it was quickly outpaced by the competition, and it was, but at the time of Microsoft purchase Skype dominated a huge portion of the VoIP market, the demise is on Microsoft solely.

Microsoft is the definition of software ******tification just look at what Windows 11 has become.

I just discovered Yadaphone which seems better value than Yolla and a better experience. It’s very new but looks promising. Hope it helps!

Teams is just a mess. I get it - for enterprise setups with the links to the Office platform and the whole Microsoft Intra stuff and all that other enterprise jazz - it continues the Microsoft way of doing things. But for small businesses and small time users it's really just a hot mess of complex overkill.

Skype was really simple and did just work - and worked rather well. As a basic messaging and group collaboration tool for small teams it was great. Chats and a history, file transfer, video and voice calls and screen sharing. Distributed team working in a nutshell.

I would never have moved away from Skype had Microsoft not killed it. In the end, I scoured the net for alternatives OTHER than Teams and decided that Signal was a good replacement. It turns out to have an even cleaner, simpler interface, is arguably much more secure, and pretty much replaces all of the frequently used parts of Skype (except the VOIP stuff) perfectly.

So in shutting down Skype, Microsoft forced me off one of their platforms onto someone else's. They didn't drive me to Teams.

I remember that Swedish TV discussed Skype when it was first released. Unfortunately, Microsoft did nothing to modernize the platform. When WhatsApp launched with an easy method for creating an account, Skype still required an email address. If it weren't for Microsoft, Skype could have become one of the largest social media platforms in the world.

Teams works but doesnt offer full feature replacement.

There doesnt seem to be an easy way like Skype had to see all friends online.

I'm sure we will get used to it...

Skype suffered a lot of issues after Microsoft took over. Messages regularly weren't instant which for a comms app was pretty useless. :)

I used it for Skype out to physical phone numbers. That didn’t transition very well to Teams. Viber seems to work. Any other really good options for calling physical phone numbers out there?

A good example was trying to buy an appliance from a shop on the other side of the world. People are hesitant to engage via email anymore for commerce because of the prevalence of phishing and scams. Sometimes you need to phone the brick and mortar, and my telco is still awful for low price international long distance calling.

RIP Skype, another blue screen of death for Microsoft
