skype sound problem macbook pro 10.5.8

Hi can someone help, I am running the latest skype on my macbook pro, everything is working except I can't hear the person talking, they can hear me fine, any ideas?
I have been through the sound preferences on skype and the sound in system preferences trying things with no luck.

So you've turned the volume up, both on your Mac and on Skype?

CAN BE IGNORED, AS I GOT THE PROBLEM REVERSED.

Does your microphone work? Look at System Preferences > Sound > Input and see, if the input is recognised.

The OP can't hear the callers, but they can hear fine. Microphone can't be the issue.

Sound issue

over the last few days I to have been having the same sound problems, all my settings are ok, yet some calls, to completely different people have failed due to them not hearing me, yet calls to others almost immediately have worked just fine, I run a Macbook Pro with Maverics, no problems until last week. the only sure has been to reinstall Skype.
