Hi all, I just found this forum and I'm not real savvy about the proper etiquette so if I step on any toes, just tell me. Thanks. I just signed up for Skype last week and I am very impressed and have used it several times to make international calls. My problem is: somehow when I set up my account I must have skipped something because when I click on Skype all that opens is a list of contacts. I can call them and it works, but there are no tabs, there is no way to post a photo, ... just the contacts. My brother, who also uses Skype described his screen to me so I know I am not getting the full deal. I tried to re-load it and it worked okay, but because I had already registered I still get just the "contacts" list. Am I describing my problem clearly? If so, can anyone help?

Thanks

I had that problem when I was using 10.3.9 and upgraded to the newest Skype. I then had to downgrade to get it working again. However, once I got a new MBP running Leopard, all was well with the newest version.

Does it look similar to this window? (Names blocked out, of course)

just get free account and try it. If you just need video chats they are free. I use it for international calls. Very good! Probably phone would be cheaper, but when you consider that you can buy credit and use when you need (if you don't talk every month 5000 minutes) vs pay all the time monthly, you save money.

To the OP's question, a good way to summarize Skype's paid service is like this: it's a great deal when it works, but if things go awry, don't expect any customer service. I was debating on getting one of their SkypeIn phone numbers, but the customer support forums are filled with threads about the service not working, Skype never canceling accounts despite multiple requests, and so on. All of that ultimately steered me away from getting an account with them.

+1 for Skype (both credit and free).

I've been using Skype for 4 years already, I started using it when I first moved overseas to keep in touch with my family (I used to call them on the land line, until my dad got a laptop with a webcam and we started videochating). Then I came back, and kept using it. I'm moving again and will keep using it for the foreseeable future.

It has helped to keep the cost of overseas phone calls low, since I've had to make a lot of calls to foreigner government offices (to ordinary landlines) in order to make the arrangements for my change of residence.

Yes! That is what it looks like (with names, of course.) Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

How to downgrade?

How would I downgrade to an older version? I was going to clear everything off my hard drive and start over, but I already have an account so it logs me in automatically.

Thanks,

(Sorry, I did that wrong... I told you I'm new at this.) Yes, that is what it looks like. Just the contacts list. Any ideas?
Thanks.
That is the normal view, with your contact list showing.

The check (first red circle) is how you change your online status. The clock icon (2nd red circle) will toggle between your contact list and your call history. The phone icon at the bottom (3rd red circle) will show a keypad to dial numbers not on your contact list.

For more details on how to use Skype, read the Help:Guides section of their site.

To the OP's question,
You may not have noticed, this is an old thread; the OP asked their question 4 1/2 months ago and hasn't been on the forum since then, so they won't see your response. The discussion now is a new question by tomasnomas09.

In the help guide I see this image of a screen. When I call a friend in Mexico and have my webcam on, there is no button for "video." Also, I thought there was supposed to be some "tabs" at the top for maneuvering about the site.

I think I have it now.....

Thank you for the responses. The key was in Preferences... by opening that window I am able to turn on the video, etc. I think I am on the right track.... all your advice was helpful... thanks again.

Help?

I have a problem a few days ago I downloaded the new skype used it and was very happy with it
Then today in the middle of a conversation for no reason the volume to the person I was calling was unclear ( they suddenly could not hear me)
I did skype call test and yes sure as hell my voice was not picking up
I have a skype enabelled mic and also another brand mic. Both same issues both not throwing my voice over to the person im calling.
I have checked the settings for volume and input output etc but nothing changes the fact it does not work
Pleaseeee could someone help me as I really had no problem until then
No other programme was running with the skype
And it was the free general talking system not any payment method

Any suggestions?

Look forward to some help or suggestions

btw i did re install skype but still no changes

Skype works fine. Been using it for years.

Great when you are out of the country and want to call someone in the US.

Video chat works pretty well too.

This is a forum, not an email service. If you don't care enough to check back here to find answers, don't expect anyone here to care enough to email your solutions. This is your first and only post in the forum. A "hit and run" approach doesn't contribute to the Mac community established here.

Skype for Mac has been around for a long time, not just since January of this year. Try checking your System Preferences to make sure you haven't accidentally changed your microphone volume level, as well as your Audio settings in Skype.

From Wikipedia:
In October 2006, Skype 2.0 for Mac is released, the first full release of Skype with video for Macintosh.

Yay old thread... I've used Skype for like 4/5 years now.

Very easy to call friend and family abroad.

Whhile we're all talkin' bout Skype, anyone know when they might update the Mac Version? I know Windows just got an update a few months ago...

Don't even know what the new features are, but since I opened "This-ol Thread," figured I ask???

Checked

I have checked settings on lap top and skype volumes im really confused as to why it would stop half way through conversation..
do you all think i should get connection checked on lap top where i put in mic?

I have now spent 4 hours trying to fix it and im sure it will be something simple

and i only put in skype a few days ago used this link from my dad
