Sleeping with external hdd

I current bought a 750 GB hard drive and put it in an OWC external enclosure. My question is, when I put the computer to sleep, how do I put the external to sleep also? Or do I have to unmount before putting it sleep? Right now, when I close the lid, the power light on the external stays lit up, thus sucking power from my computer!

you will have to first unmount the drive from the computer, then power it down manually (assuming its a 3.5" drive).

Well its actually a 2.5" but I think that is my only option, which is somewhat depressing.

oh i see, it will power down automatically when you eject the drive only. the light will stay on but almost 0w power will be used (even when not ejected).
