My Apple TV is an older one and I was thinking of going to get the 4th generation for the Sling TV app. I see that the Buyers Guide says "Don't Buy".

Right now I don't have a 4K TV but if mine should bite the dust, that's what I'd get. Should I wait?

We are expecting to see ATV 5 release in September or October. But those are just strong rumors. I have 8 TV's and 8 ATV 4's. If you need it now and you can move it to a second TV later it should be a good box for years to come. You may want to start looking for sales. DTV Now is give a free ATV 4 32GB if you pay for 3 months in advance. 35 x 3 = 105. Really good deal if interested in DTV Now.

You should be able to use an iPhone/iPad to send the app feed to the Apple TV. That is what I did until the ATV4 came out with the Sling app supported on it.

As an aside, I also had an older HDTV die last year and I purchased a 65" 4K TV. Love it and I still see a pretty clear picture on it with the ATV4, despite not being 4K.

I'd say if you can wait a few more days do it. Apple TV 5 may launch at the same price point and Apple TV 4 may be discounted. Then you can at least save a few bucks or get the top of the line.

I've been itching to get another one for another TV in the house but I'll wait. If this was 3-6 months ago I would say go ahead and get the 4.
