Sloooooow MBP

I have a MBP that is not even 6 mos old yet it runs slower than the Powerbook that I bought in 2004. I consistently run the disk utility but it does not make much difference. I did update to Leopard which has made it run even slower (didn't seem possible) but it was definitely sluggish beforehand.
Help!! Any tips?
 
a bit more info would be nice...

RAM??
HD (RPM)?
Apps your running when the MBP becomes sluggish?
