I'm stuck with a jailbroken iPhone 4 on 5.1.1. I've learned I can't really upgrade to any higher than that now without losing my jailbreak (is that right?).

My device is noticeably slowing down (not sure whether it's age or apps or what....), so I was going to attempt a restore. Am I right in thinking I would be able to restore my device without updating it to the latest iOS version? If I did restore, would I lose my jailbreak? And if so, would I just be able to jailbreak it again (albeit still on 5.1.1?). I'd really like to keep my jailbreak as the majority of my most-used apps/tools are only available through Cydia.

    I'd appreciate some suggestions! :)

As it is a IP4 you have some options:

Do you have blobs/SHSH's for 5.1.1? Then you can re-restore to 5.1.1 with redsn0w and untether JB with redsn0w afterwards.
    http://www.iclarified.com/25156/how-to-rerestore-your-iphone-from-ios-5x-to-ios-5x-windows

Or Manually saved blobs for 6.1.2, then you can upgrade to 6.1.2 and untether JB with eavsi0n. If you need an unlock make-sure you perserve the BB. Either use redsn0w or sn0wbreeze to upgrade

Or you can upgrade to 6.1.3 and tether JB with redsn0w. If you need an unlock make-sure you perserve the BB. Either use redsn0w or sn0wbreeze to upgrade

Thanks mate, very detailed and concise answer!

In short, I don't need to worry about unlock as I live in the UK and got my handset unlocked by my carrier. Not really 100% sure what an SHSH/blob is, but I've never had my phone updated to a later firmware than 5.1.1 if that helps explain my situation any better?

I didn't upgrade to iOS 6 because a) I didn't know if my iPhone 4 would be even slower on a newer OS, and b) I didn't really see that much worth upgrading for.

Ok, if you don't know what SHSH's are you didn't save them manually in any case :)

SHSH's are used to restore to non-signed firmware versions.

Check in Cydia, check TSS Center at the top of that page it will say which blobs you have. If 5.1.1 is in there you can re-restore, any 6.x blob will be invalid as there was a problem with those, for the upgrade to 6.1.3 you don't need blobs as it is the currently signed firmware by Apple

If you have the 5.1.1 SHSH use the iclarified tutorial to re-restore.

Alternatively you can use iLEX RAT to bring your phone back to a just jailbroken state, it will remove all but the essential JB files, mostly problems can be solved that way.

Haha thanks, yeah I know what SHSH's do but not sure if I would have saved manually, seeing as I read something about Cydia saving some for you (I guess that's the TSS center thing you were talking about...)

In any case, it says I have 5.1-5.1.1 and 6.1.3.... I hope it's alright if I ask a couple more questions...!! :)

So am I right in thinking I can either restore 5.1.1 via that helpful tutorial you linked to, or use this iLEX RAT tool to do it in-device? I've just checked it out, it seems pretty useful....are there any advantages/disadvantages? I guess if I really want to speed up my device, restoring it to 'factory' but still jailbroken with this RAT tool is probably a good idea... I have my Cydia apps backed up via iBye so I should hopefully be able to restore them via that....

Finally, what's my 6.13 options? I didn't know that was possible... is that because Cydia has my SHSH saved for 6.1.3? Perhaps I should try that one..... Or will that be a tethered jailbreak?

ya, you will need to make a 5.1.1 firmware with redsn0w. just plug in your phone, go to extras, even more, restore, and you will have to download the iOS 5.1.1 ipsw for your iPhone. then click on the ipsw button in redsn0w, and it will take you to a window. navigate to the ipsw, and click choose. now it will make the ipsw. I'm not sure what you do next. I'm pretty sure you put it into pwned dfu, and restore in iTunes.
