Slow iMessages on Mac

I hope this is considered the right place even though it's sorta Mac-related....

More often than not, when I send an iMessage using Messages on my Mac, it takes FOREVER for the message to send. If I send it on my phone (same network), it is of course, instant. This happens most often when I go someplace outside of my local network and come back. Still, it doesn't make sense. If the phone and the Mac are on the same wifi network, shouldn't it be fast on the Mac too?

Any ideas if there's a way to fix this? It's extremely annoying.

Are you trying to send an iMessage or a text message (SMS)?
I am not sure but that could be the problem.
