I recently purchased an old Intel Mac Mini (1.5 Core Solo) to use as a media server, as my Macbook Pro is beginning to run out of room with all my photos and music.

I purchased new RAM to take it up to the maximum 2GB and a new 750GB hard drive, which I thought should cover me for a while! I also upgraded it to 10.6 Snow Leopard.

However, it is running very slowly (and it did the same when running 10.4 Tiger after the new hardware bits). Boot up into OSX takes around 5 minutes, and once in opening apps or even just clicking on things can produce the spinning ball. Everything seems to be physically plugged in ok, and there are no error messages. The System Profiler gives the correct new hardware specification.

I should have just bought a newer one, but I used to enjoy upgrade DIY on old PCs! Since moving to Macs, I have never had such issues.

Any thoughts? I would appreciate some guidance on what other checks I can run, and any other way of seeing why it's running slowly and what I can do about it.

    Thanks very much.

Sounds like something on the hard drives end, I would recommend running disk utility.
