Yeah these utilities are great for the beachballs. But it seems like a band aid for the actual issue. I've been running Onyx For a while now. But recently I had to reinstall SL on my MBP. It now feels like a new computer. I was kinda pissed I had to do a reinstall but SL made the process absolutely painless. Put the disk in and it did the rest in about 20 minutes. My MBP has never felt so fast.
Any, I'm not saying everyone should do a reinstall, but if your problems continue after running these utilities, then it might be worth a shot.

I'd be curious to see if anyone using an SSD for their OS and apps gets this also... Apart from more memory, this issue is making me more and more want to get an SSD.

Ran the extended hardware test (>2 hours) by pressing D and holding down till EHD screen comes up on startup. 4HDD/11/40000004: SATA(0,0) error. So if you're having some issues, and you've run Disk Utility all the parts, you might just want to run EHD after sorting out PRAM etc.
