Hey people. I upgraded the HD to SSD and 4GB to 8GB RAM in April 2018, exactly a year ago. It made a big difference initially, and probably comparably to the old HD still, but I do feel some sluggishness now, especially with browsers more so, and drop down of ‘Favourites’ freeze up. YouTube is a slower load. It’s an early 2011 so shouldn’t expect lightning.

Question is, can I take out one of the newer 4GB sticks and replace with a new 8 to make 12GB. Don’t want two 8 as I think 16 is too fierce for this old MBP and isn’t recommended. Plus I’ve only had these sticks in for 1 year. But would it cure the sluggishness any?

I don’t expect miracles but wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem and if it’s worth doing or just make do with what I have.

Thanks.

RAM beyond 8GB wouldn't make any discernible difference for your usage. On the 13" 2011s and 2012s, they had a fairly high failure rate with the SATA cables as they degrade from air and dust.

My first instinct is that the SATA cable is failing. As it's a fairly easy repair, plus recommended for precautionary measures, I'd start with that and see how you get on. :)
