i put a small disk in, but there was just enough of it pokeing out that i managed to remove it. it is bad that they can slide in, but not come out... the mechanism should physically block them or something.

As a correction, Samsung has a slot-load DVD burner that accepts 80 mm discs. External, USB bus-powered (or AC, for higher write speed), and pretty fraggin thin. Found at:

Newegg just dropped the price by $10 to 89.99 USD:

Looks great for case-builders, as it's probably just IDE in the enclosure. Too bad that according to the reviews, LightScribe doesn't work on Macs :(

Don't do it. These are not safe in any slot load drive.

This is simply not true. They are not safe in any currently shipping Apple product with a slot load drive. Many desktop slot-load drives (5.25") work just fine with mini CDs (although I wouldn't try the funny shaped ones.) And even some older Apple's work just fine. All of Apple's slot-load reader-only devices accept mini CDs. Such as the original slot-load iMac G3 with a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, but not the CD-RW models; as well as the DVD-ROM Titanium PowerBook G4, but again, not the CD-RW, Combo, or SuperDrive models.
