The batteries had to shrink a bit to accommodate the 3D Touch taptic engine (had nothing to do with weight). The A9 SoC is much more efficient than the A8, hence the same battery life between the 6/6 Plus vs. 6s/6s Plus even though there is a slightly smaller battery.

That's cool but it's still a shame they had no room to squeeze a bigger battery in. It would have been nice to get more battery life instead of striving for the same.

Shouldn't a brand new phone with a new battery have a longer usage time between charges than a 12 month old phone? Why strive for mediocrity? I find it disappointing.

It's not a strive for mediocrity so much as it is a struggle to maintain a thin form factor and accommodate for new technologies.

Who seriously cares about the over-thin form factor though? I understand what you're saying but I was hoping for even better battery life with the 6S+. The 'extra hour' that iOS9 gives would be nicer on top of last year's model, not to keep it similar.

Apple does but I certainly don't. I wouldn't have minded a thicker phone if that's what it takes to keep the same size battery.

I understand you are disappointed but Apple has been into this "thin" thing and batteries have got small and ports are missing on several of their products just to make their stuff thinner!

It is not Apple's priority to make the iPhone battery last for 5 days!

The 6 and 6+ and the new S iPhone will more than last long enough for the average user.

It's all about milking out the customers. Gradually improving things in order to get people to upgrade every year. Next year at the Keynote they will be able to say "we have improved battery life with a whopping 10%". I'm only in the Apple world for 4 months now, but I know for sure that upgrading every year makes no sense (in my opinion). The year to year changes are too small to justify that. I am happy though that they noticeably improved the battery life on my iPhone 6 (which was already satisfying to me) after the iOS 9 update. So yeah, props to Apple for that.

Does this mean that a 6+ running iOS9 will have a longer battery life than a 6S+ on the same version of iOS? That seems scandalous to me.

Technically battery life on current devices should increase by an hour based on the statement ios9 gives you an extra hour. However, No specs have been updated to reflect this!
So an iPhone 6 running iOS 9 should have 15 hrs of talk time and 11hrs of browsing. This would give the 6s lesser battery life than the 6. Can't wait for the official reviews to come out which will give us a better idea of battery life.

It would seem that the 3D engine is indeed taking up valuable battery space.
I'll reserve judgement until I've used it but 3D Touch sounds like a gimmick to me and I'd rather have a bigger battery.

I expect battery life to be exactly the same. Even Apple specifies this in the compare iPhones webpage.
That's comparing the 6+ on iOS8 to the 6S+ on iOS9, and yet iOS9 is supposed to give ALL phones an extra hour of battery life....which leads me to believe that a 6+ running iOS9 will have a longer battery life?

You make no sense.

In one thread you're complaining the new phones weigh too much. In this thread you're complaining there's not enough battery and they should have squeezed more in.

I can't keep up with the flip flop.

I agreed with an OP that the 6S+ weighed too much. So? I'm not best pleased that the new phone weighs more than the old phone and yet has a smaller battery to boot. Oh to live in your world where everything is fantastic and beyond reproach.
