HomePod mini sounds like a no-brainer. What's more interesting is the idea of improving the hardware of the main HomePod. Hard to imagine improving the sound by much. A faster chip wouldn't seem to make a material difference (it's already fast). What else could they do?

The big change i'd like to see with the HomePod is the inclusion of a battery and replacement of the power cord with a charging station like cordless kettles use, With additional stations sold extra then have the charging station override the HomePods room/group setting.

That way a HomePod can be picked up, taken from one room to another and placed down on a charging station. The battery would only need to be powerful enough to keep the compute system running not the speakers, so you don't have to wait for a restart when moving.

WiFi 6 is a no-brainer if the hardware is being updated anyway.

The current HomePods are so amazing I wonder what V 2.0 will offer? I also am wondering if I will have to buy some and relegate my current 5 to guest rooms and such. It will be interesting to hear the mini HomePod. I might have a few uses for them. Son replaced his Alexia covered house with HomePods by taking advantage of the various $199 sales. As a software VP he says he much prefers the request flexibility oh Siri to the more rigid Alexia, whatever that means.

If I buy a speaker, it is primarily there to play music. Everything else is a bonus. Would you want to use an Echo Dot as a speaker for your music? Or a Home Mini? Siri is just a bonus on top.
I disagree completely. This is marketed as a smart speaker, or at least that was my impression. This is not a standard Bluetooth speaker.

Also, to everyone thinking low stock means refresh, didn’t they JUST launch HomePod in another country? Seems unlikely they’d release an updated version so soon, and more like they are probably diverting supply to keep up with demand of the new launch. This is speculation, of course.

so you think In order for Apple to compete they would have to do this? I’ve seen several articles about Apple buying companies who focus on privacy and AI..I’m hoping that it can be done but it is just taking some time
Apple can only make it convenient for Apple users to extend their use of a multiple Siri access points within their home.

However Apple cannot “compete” for share of the consumers who want a dirt cheap unit and don’t mind or don’t understand that they are pimping their privacy in return.

Further, even with Users already the Apple ecosystem I wonder what impact this can have in the home, when those users already have a Siri-endpoint-and-speaker in their pocket (iPhone) , on their wrist (Apple watch) and a few more of the world’s best-selling tablet on their tables (one IPad for each for every family member since Apple only allows single users on them).

As a loudspeaker the phone and tablet are “good enough” for most people in this modern culture.

So like I saidin another thread, Apple cannot “win market share” battle at the low end price points without compromising on product quality or data privacy.

Seems to me therefore, that this loudspeaker game for them has to go upmarket to include a bigger HomePod + subwoofer, ideally with at least an optical audio input jack. That would allow Apple to gain market share in a much more distruptable market: the home cinema segment served by wired receivers and speakers.

But cheapo low end speakers as a sole direction is NOT going to cut it within the framework of Apples current profitability strategy and privacy policy.

The only other rationale I can imagine for Apple doing a cheapo speaker-microphone isif they plan to launch a huge wave of dumber home electronics for which this speaker would be the one always there smart, voice enabled Apple HomeKit control point in each room. Still though I don’t know if that will cut it as a business case...

Have it (and Apple TV) do WiFi 6 and create a mesh network and many will buy.

E.g. buy for the mesh and HomePod thrown in or buy the HomePod and get the time capsule replacement thrown in.

If you have two Apple TVs and two HomePods and your home network would have good coverage.

My only real complaint is that I can’t get a stereo pair to work as an Airplay target... I can set a single unit up and share to devices not on its network, but I can’t seem to do that with a pair.

I’ve successfully done just that. Sounds like you have a glitch, as it’s not a feature limitation or anything.

In Home app on iPhone, set up two as stereo pair. Play AppleMusic from them directly and anything I want streamed to them from my iPhone and Apple TV.

The sound is awesome for all of the above.

My only gripes really are:

(1) that the connection is a little unreliable - sometimes I have to go in and re-tell the Apple TV to use them after having the iPhone or something else use them for a bit. I think this is a side effect of the fact that I’m using them as audio from multiple devices so I suppose it’s not a whole lot different from the old days of an amp with a “source” switch or dial or whatever or telling a TV what source/input it should be using at any given moment. And at least when I do ask it to connect it does so immediately instead of the usual hassle with things like standard Bluetooth speakers.

(2) Raw macOS doesn’t support AirPlay 2??? Go figure. So I can play to these from certain apps on my Mac(Music, etc) that have Airplay 2 support but can’t select a stereo pair of HomePods as standard macOS output in system prefs (can select one or the other but not the pair). Hopefully that’s coming in a macOS update...?

Aside from those two issues these things are freaking awesome.

If the old model wasn't selling well, I'm sure it will sell much better during a pandemic!

Hopefully this one has enough capability to make it worthwhile. If so, I do think the cheaper one will sell well as long as those coronavirus checks keep coming. Otherwise most people I know, myself included, are just hoarding cash right now.

Once it allows me to double it as a sound bar for my TV (not only Apple TV) then I'm in. Until then, I'll pass.

My dream version of this product would be the HomePod Pro: a Dolby atmos Sound bar with Apple TV built in and HDMI eARC port with the ability to pair two smaller HomePods for rear surround sound support. 😍😍😍

I love the current sound quality of the HomePod. I hope the lower cost version doesn’t trade of sound quality for cost, though I’m sure it will.

I really hope that they don’t “obsolete” the current version HomePod. MR already pointed at the HomePod now as being “moved” to the TVOS version of the iOS, so there’s hope that the A8 will be supported yet. If the original HomePod sold so bad that there’s yet units available for sale (since the original 2017 manufacturing batch), what’s the point of launch a replacement? How you do the same without compromising quality. Margins were tight on the original (https://www.techinsights.com/blog/apple-homepod-teardown-and-cost-comparison). And they had to pay the surely expensive Spike Jonze ad :p.
Maybe they will introduce a Mini Version that will join the older HP brother or they discontinue the older one. Hardware wise the current HP is hard to beat. Unless we get a “Pro”...

Sounds close to what Sonos just released with their Atmos sound bar, and presumable ability to connect a sub woofer, and two wireless Ones for surround support. For a lot of money o_O

K. Just bought another one. Hopefully the stereo sound pairing that people keep raving about impresses me. :)

Too bad in Europe their price is basically immutable. No discounts no nothing. I wouldn’t mind grabbing a couple more otherwise.

Maybe after it’s discontinued.
It’s been £199 in the U.K.

I guess I wonder, will it be better than the heavily discounted 'OG' HomePods? Since those have hit $199 many times at this point (the sweet spot imo)

edit- looks like its $199 @ Best Buy right now actually

I got mine at the first wave of that, price matched from Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) over at Best Buy lol

Its one they explicitly honor oddly enough, and it was like a year and a half ago now I made the move.

Great sound quality, its all I want out of an AirPlay speaker. Still wouldn't pay a penny more for it though. I said when HomePod came out "at $199 I'll bite" so these would need to hit that, and hopefully cheaper on sale, to be a success imo
That’s the question, which one will be better value as a reduced HomePod as it stands is a pretty good deal. It depends on what they take away from the new model and what is added.

This. Sort of, anyway. Either play very nicely with my Sonos equipment (e.g. Siri control to issue commands to Sonos - that’d probably take iOS 14), or give me a “Siri Home Theater” (whether sound bar or center channel - a HomePod center channel, two regular HomePods for front L/R, and a pair of HomePod mini’s for surrounds).

Smaller, lower price, smarter and with more audio input options might make it a more interesting item. As it is, I'm surprised they even sold that many.

Im really happy with the four Homepods I have now. What I would love is a portable, rechargeable version I can move around the house or bring out by the pool on nice days in the summer.

$199 is a steal for the original HomePod if you're in it more for the quality of the speakers and less for a powerful virtual assistant. Sound-wise it competes with the Google Home Max that launched at double the price.

No lies told. I tested the HomePod at the Apple Store and was absolutely floored by the sound quality. Almost bought one on the spot.
