So it appears that even though the iPhone 13 notch is smaller it doesn't utilize the space any better.

All I wanted was battery percentage at a glance again.

It's kind of comical actually. I'm not swinging from Apples jock like a lot of Apple members here so I have no trouble looking at things with clear eyes. The way Apple talks up their so called "new" features, and they way their fans eat it up, is nothing short of legendary. Pretty lazy on Apple's part to just shrink the notch and do nothing with the extra space... but some around here will call it like it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I miss battery percentage too and am also disappointed. At least it’s a software issue so if Apple are planning it, or get shamed into it, better use of the status bar width could come in a future iOS update.

The only thing I will say, even though I personally want battery % on there, sometimes it's nice not seeing it all the time and obsessing over it. But yeah still wish it was on there.

Maybe you have to activate it in the settings.

Thats how it worked for pre-notch iPhones

I want the VPN icon to show but they could do that now by putting it above the cellular, WiFi and battery icons.

Exactly. Would be VERY helpful to see VPN at a glance. Important thing for those who use it. I was hopeful, but alas. Next year perhaps.

Glad I’m not upgrading this year for the first time since the 5s. The only real unexpected feature of this phone (outside of the expected battery, processor, very slight and incremental camera improvements, and very slight antenna improvements) is the variable refresh rate. No ”wow” factor this year.

Well it seems like they saved the space by moving the earpiece up, and decoupling it from the notch. That's where they lost the width, and because they moved it up, increased the height. It doesn't not look like they did anything significant engineering-wise to shrink it.

Literally have no idea why they said they shrank the notch to give you more display and then not use it.. maybe in a later iOS update.
