I'm with you. The current option is much thicker and develops "shine marks" from where you frequently grasp it. Unlike the leather case that aged really well. I also don't recall when silicone became more expensive than leather, but I've accepted it at this point. The only downside to that style of case is that it blocks the smart connector, but some of us don't use it much (or at all).
I loved the smart case because it had a much more professional look without being a huge leather case. By NO MEANS is this even remotes close to Apple's SmartCase quality, but I ordered a few of these and have used them since the spring. I work in a hospital and use my iPad while seeing patients all day, so I know it picks up all sorts of bacteria, etc. So I use one of these $5 cases for about 1 month to 2 months (at most) and then just throw it away and start with a new one. Plus I don't feel bad disinfecting my case with lysol wipes constantly with these compared to my actual leather case to prevent it from drying out to much.
I tried out a number of those options either didn't fit right or had portions made up of really cheap plastic. Granted, I purchased my iPad Pro at launch so many of these accessories may have improved Since then.
In my mind, despite spending money and time trying out 10+ options, there isn't a replacement that comes close the Apple's leather smart case.

I'm planning to get the Smart Cover but cannot afford the Apple silicon cover. Did you find another brand fro the back cover that you'd recommend? Thanks!
