iPad Smart Cover all Back lock screen

I bought an Ipad Air with an Apple Smart Cover . Everytime i open a smart cover and put it all behind the ipad the screen turns off and lock Ipad like it is in front. Is it normal?
It is a genuine Smart Cover
I have an Ipad 3 and it does not happen.

Seems like a malfunction with the magnets. It is thinking that the Smart Cover sticking to the back is the same position as it sticking to the front.

Thanks I tried with a leather case cover and it did not happen. I know that a case and a cover are different and it is not normal. I hope that the problem is an Smart issue and not Ipad.
