I can tell you that after a year, the lighter hues will show more dirt than the darker ones. I'm actually replacing my light gray cover with dark gray because of how dirty my light gray one looks. My wife's green (first gen, not the new, brighter green) Smart Cover also looks very dingy now.

Very good point, and something to consider. For me, I'll bite the bullet and buy a new one after a period of time, or even ask an Apple store if they'll swap it out under some sort of "normal wear and tear" thing. ;)

I had the Black leather on my White iPad 2 but I sold it on Craigslist and the buyer wanted the cover too :( (for his price I couldn't say no though)

I went with a Green poly cover for the new iPad, I really like the Red leather one but I believe you can only get it at Apple Stores or online and I live 2+ hours from an Apple Store.

I don't know if Apple has changed their leather in the last few months but I had a black leather one with my black iPad 2 and it didn't actually feel or seem like real leather. However, I picked up the tan color leather one at an apple store to go with my iPad 3 and HOLY COW is it soft!! The tan in person also looks the most like leather & I figure will give it almost a leather book kinda quality. The navy blue is deep in person, almost looks black unless you're under bright light. I had almost preordered blue but then skipped it since I knew I would be near an apple store a few days later; so glad I did! I wish they had a rich blue or green or orange in leather, but the tan seemed bright and crisp enough to go with the white. The cream just was a little too off white & will only look more "dirty" when with the crisp white of the iPad. Also I doubt it'll be easy to keep clean, tan MIGHT hold up to daily "discoloring" better.

Just to let anyone interested in the orange smart cover know, I found a bunch of orange smart covers at my local target and picked one up. I think if you really want an orange one you can probably find one at a target, bestbuy, Walmart, etc. if you call around.

sold my ipad2 white and sold my green smart cover with it...wish i would have held onto it.

but after seeing how nice the black on black looked...i picked up a black smart cover off ebay for 50 bucks. should look nice on my new black ipad

I can't remember if the DPCI appears on the receipt, but if you have a nine digit number, possibly in the format xxx-xx-xxxx, we could check stock at target through the website. (Maybe. I'm not sure it works for items that aren't listed on the website)

I bought a tan leather cover today, and sprayed it with mink oil to try to give it an aged leather look. So far it's still tan...

I bought a cream/white leather cover while trying out an iPad 2 briefly. I'm anal about my stuff and thought it would be workable.
Small coffee stains mysteriously appeared while at my boyfriends (the same day he'd been poking at it with dirty hands to tease me.)

It was only a week or so old and had nasty brown spots, albeit tiny ones. :(
I soaped up the entire leather surface with dishwashing soap which removed most of the marks, but I really shouldn't have procrastinated with a pre-emptive polish with Meltonian cream polish. Polish would really help repeal stains, I am sure.

The red was my other choice (to go with a white iPad,) and I sort of wish I'd gotten it instead.

But here is the big reason I am posting:
The leather covers can easily be dyed a darker colour if too soiled. :)

Leather dye can be found online or at cobblers, and it works great in my experience. I figured if the white became a problem then I'd just make it a unique shade. Burgundy, perhaps?

My new iPad arrives tomorrow, so I am trying to decide tonight whether to try the polish or to dye it now while the leather is most suited to it. :D

JeffMorse,

That looks so much nicer!

Does it feel sticky from the oiling?
I oiled a tan Brooks [bicycle] saddle, and it promptly turned very dark, but it took a while to really absorb. I'd expect you can't saturate the smart cover enough for a great change without stickiness?

I think I have seen a product or two for creating the look you seek. Check that out if you aren't pleased with the oil?

alba-ny,

It's not sticky at all, thankfully. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

Hopefully this'll help repel stains too.

I sold my old red smart cover with the iPad 2, but bought another red smartcover this week for the new ipad, and noticed the differences you mentioned too. Seems much nicer and smells great. Now, if only it will stay this way over the next few years!
