As to my speculation, why are ANY of us here talking about the device before it comes out? I'm just having fun reading about new tech, and there is nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned.

I am sorry if I came on a little harsh. I have been trying to have fun myself, but sifting through the bs on this forum and pretty much everywhere else has pretty much took any said fun out of it. I probably jumped the gun and tried to lump you into the 'haters' group trying to point out every last thing 'wrong' with it My apologies.

It is a cool device. The case seems fun. Can't wait to get my hands on it to know if I will be purchasing it or not though.

For my Current Ipod I have the Incase Magazine Jacket. It's alot like the original apple case, except this one does'nt get a Dirty, it has the abilty to stand in portrait or Landscape, or flat. And it covers the screen and the back, its a nice case. I can see Incase doing this design for the Ipad 2 with magnets for the front but covered in the back

I think it's a clever, simple design and I like it but, like others, I worry about the lack of protection for the back. It's good that the cover can be folded back so that you can lay the iPad down on surfaces without the back coming into direct contact with them, but I think there's a huge potential for the edge of the iPad to become very scratched whilst you're using the cover propped up in the typing position.

If I were going to get one, I wouldn't rely on using it on its own, I'd have to put it in some kind of padded sleeve for travelling around.

I also think the pastel colours could potentially get very dirty. I tend to favour dark colours personally, so I'd be looking at the leather.

I don't agree, at all. It's not that great of an idea.

I'm excited to see what third party case manufacturers will do with the magnets (?) in the iPad that will allow it to be woken up by this cover. It will offer extra functionality for other cases, but the smart cover really isn't all that useful.

If the price is right, Apple will probably license that functionality to 3rd accessory makers.

License what functionality? The magnets are there, I don't think other case manufacturers need Apple's permission to use them. Unless you are talking about something else?

Will the previous Apple iPad case work with the iPad 2?

I can see these side hinge magnets scratching the metal side of the iPad 2. :(

ipad2 is 0.06" shorter, 0.16" narrower, and 0.16" thinner.

So if you like wearing clothes two sizes to big, it might "work". Probably look like heck though.

I think it makes some sense that the cover only covers the screen. The iPad 2 really only has a front and a back. If apple made a case that covered both, then there would be too many holes cut out for it.

Think about it

-Headphone jack
-Lock button
-Speaker (pretty large one too)
-Camera
-Mic (not near the headphone jack anymore)
-Volume controls
-Rotation/Mute switch
-Dock

That would just be too many separate cutouts for a case. We all saw how ugly those cases that we have been seeing for a few months now look. Plus, with the smartcover, when you are sitting it up in landscape, it wont cover the back camera.

Yoobao will clean up offering a version of the original Apple iPad case modified to fit iPad 2. Punters want all-round protection — the Smart Cover doesn't offer it.

Another potential fan here. Really clever, and an absolute minimum additional thickness. Hate to think I might upgrade for the case rather than the iPad . . .;)

brilliant

I think it's cool as a stand because it doesn't add bulk and can be easily removed. I agree it's overpriced, but everything at Apple is overpriced, so why complain now?

I think it's a really nice design. I'm not worried about the back. I usually don't use a case on my stuff anyway, and I've never had trouble selling it when it's time to upgrade. Only problem is picking a color. The blue is nice, the red too and the orange would match my favorite guitar amplifier. Hmmm...

For me it's between the blue and the gray. I would really like all of them, but that would be $400.

The blue looks nice with the black. And the gray looks nice with the aluminum.

Ahhh decisions decisions

Sitting enjoy a coffee in the cafe with my new iPad2, propped up on the nice smart cover watching a Netflix movie. Fold the cover back over when it's time to leave. Arrive home and open the cover with a coffee stain on the inside and crumbs. I failed to notice the c*ap on the table (assumed the previous person had cleaned up after themselves/didn't eat and drink like an animal).

Cover should fold into itself.

It's just about keeping it in good condition. The plastic films look really terrible; if they aren't applied right, they'll get bubbles and they also get dirty over time.

It's all about keeping your stuff in good condition. Resale value would be the main argument for people who buy Apple products.

What's the price difference between a 'pristine' 1 year old iPad and one that shows normal wear?

Yup - I kept my iPad 1 mint with the Apple cover and got back what I paid for it only last month as I could sell it "Mint"

Then you found a fool for a buyer since they could have bought a new iPad 1 for $100 less than the original purchase price.

The cover looks like a slick idea to me. From the video, it looks a third party could modify the design to integrate a back cover. They could probably make a tougher front cover too.

Smart Cover vs Facetime camera

When holding the iPad in portrait position, the camera is centered and in perfect position for facetime or skype call...

I wonder if that's the case in landscape position too (left or right side). As landscape is the only position the smart cover allows this might be an issue...

Can't find any info about that on apple's site...

I'm attracted to the orange, but I also like the black. Hmmm, I wish Apple did a buy one get on half price or something offer. Then I would defiantly get both.

I can but dream

We're assuming magnets are both in the cover and in the iPad? They could have just put magnets in the cover and metal in the ipad? or vice versa? I guess magnets in both is stronger? but magnets only in the cover would seem like a good design if it was workable.
