Since the iOS 11 betas started rolling out there’s been some debate about the usefulness of Smart Invert. It looks like app developers are starting to get on board, this is a positive development for those (like me) who would prefer to use SI.

Isn't smart invert not supposed to invert media colors by default on its own (basically that's one of the main reasons why it was added and why it's "smart")?

Pretty sure it’s going to be app-dependent. Apple’s News app does a great job. However iMessage still can’t handle emojis, and the battery indicator in the status bar disappears.

Way above my pay grade!

smart invert is almost dark mode (finally), but it needs an disable option for chosen apps (it's useless with youtube, for example). where it does work... it's great. still, i turned it off; i don't want to have to turn it on & off depending on the app. c'mon apple, you almost have it!

It definitely could work as a dark mode. Does some funky things for random colors or on snap it makes things look ghostly. Maybe later next year there will be more options. We can keep hoping anyway.

Flipboard updated similarly yesterday, hopefully we see a tidal wave of updates.

Twitter fixed media within tweets, however avatars are still inverted. And as mentioned iOS still has its own support inconsistencies. I think this will take some time.

I have a feeling it’s going to be a focus going forward, particularly in light of Apple’s seemingly increased focus on software-based battery life extension. iOS 11 includes more aggressive auto-brightness and they hid the toggle to dissuade users from disabling it. With increased use of OLED displays (which save battery by “using” more pure black) it’s really a no-brainer to support a dark mode as well.

I am using it now as my default setting, wish it worked throughout Safari but of course that's not in Apple's hands. I just emailed Clue to request they support this with their next update, hopefully! I believe WhatsApp will never support this though, they are by far the laziest, most mediocre developers I've seen.
