SMC Issue on MBP 13 - Hardware Troubleshooting Guide

K87

Hi all working on a K87 I have G3 hot green & orange 5 & 3.25V still will not boot no fan spin. SMC reset no good.
I think that puts me at s4? all the boards i have done so far have booted after this point.
Any ideas thanks

First id check if you get s3 and s0 voltages.
use the power pads then flip the baord over, check if cpu or chipset are getting warmer, or infact warmer than one another.
Check voltage at all coils for voltages required for firstly MCP PS PWRGD and then ALL SYS PWGD
should give some indication of what voltages are missing and where the problem could lie.

Hey, So Ive literally been reading this thread for weeks now and Im not even close to the end haha, any way I have a 2011 MBP 13" MC700LL/A that was working great. I also have another 2011 that was working but not charging, so the genius I am, I used the perfectly working one to test off of which I knew I shouldn't have because I sold it and need to ship it out, but now it won't charge, it runs off the battery and turns on off battery power, I tried a new magsafe and different good battery and multiple chargers and its not changing to amber light, but the battery seems to stay the same percentage 84%, I was probing around the ISL6258 area with the multimeter, which is that charging chip from researching on here and now its not charging so Im guessing I shorted something, can someone please help me out and FAST, I love this thread BTW it is so amazing, anyone with suggestions would be awesome. The mac runs fine on battery but doesnt charge
 
Also, the battery indicator light has one green l.e.d. blinking, Ive also done SMC and PRAM resets with no avail, I don't want to make things worse, I tried QFN soldering once and it didn't turn out well, but I was dumb enough to already spend the money the buyer paid and now I fear Ill have to refund somehow, So if someone could help please

pull the battery out. Plug the magsafe in.
Test the voltage coming of the white fuse?
does it run of magsafe alone?
 
Yes, it does run off magsafe alone, but I had a bigger probblem happen when probing around the charging IC it must have shorted and the smoke rolled up, upon removing the QFN, all pads look ok except one, Ive attempted this fix twice before and never had success always destroyed the board, so Im selling it right now on ebay, Sucks because it just worked great yesterday, If anyone wants it, $300 and its yours, PM me, I actually have 2, with that chip marked i 625 9AHRTZ removed, that both worked.

I forgot to add, when I saw a tad bit of smoke, I saved it by disconnecting all power in time, so I think it can be fixed, I just don't have the equipment to do it.

Did you ruin the pad? they dont just burn. i too have attempted to repair pads on an isl but the trace jumps ive done havent been successful as they lift the chip slightly.

So situation:
Mbp 13 mid 2010
Waterspilled.
Doesn't charge
Doesn't work with magsafe only
Works with battery
Work in smc bypass mode
Keyboard changed
Dc in board changed
Battery light indicator cable broken (new ordered)
Green light when magsafe connected
Turns into amber after few seconds and turns back to green
Sometimes the amber light stays and when I push the power button, light turns to green. It chimes and the display turns on but it shuts down.
If I keep the amber light on for 12 hours, it doesn't charge.
G3hot present
I have measured 16volts on logic board, but it has been very random. I don't know the lines to follow.

I'm trying to follow the 12 volt line, but I have problems to read the board view with my ipad. So I don't know where it goes.

All help is needed. About measuring or the board view problem.

Edit. And just noticed that after smc reset the green light turns to amber nd stays amber, but still if I try to power up the mbp the light turns green and shortly after chime it shuts down.

I try to keep it amber for few hours so I can see if it charges.

Check for 16v on pin 2 of u7000
Check for 12v across the white fuse whilst the battery is disconnected
Check for G3hot whilst the battery is not connected.
Should give us an idea of roughly weather the fault is input to u7000 or output for 12v and g3h

Sounds like the isl6259 charger IC is shot. With battery removed you should see 12v on the white fuse. If not, then the charger circuit is bad. Quite probably the isl6259 needs to be replaced.

Board view is a windows exe file so you need to run on a PC or install wine on your Mac. Don't think there are any apps to run windows exe files.

I cleaned the whole board and now looks like without rest of corrosion. Everything looks OK. The ISL6259, TPS51125 (5V, 3V) was dead and the two FETs Q7030, Q7035 too. I changed all and now the MacBook is starting with or without magsafe but won't charge. And nothing like a normal green or orange LED signal.

I see on the Q7055 FET Drain side is the battery voltage and the Source side is the 12.59V voltage from the ISL6259 FETs. I really don't understand why won't charge and why the ISL CHGR_BGATE not open the Q7055 FET to charge the battery.

I haven't right now no more idea...

Try running the MBP without the battery indicator light
Sounds silly but it may charge, when they go wrong they inturupt a three way handshake with the smc meaning it wont charge despite running of a charged battery and running from a magsafe perfectly fine.

Thanks for the fast response. Not helped. Maybe I found one trouble. The CHGR_VCOMP is only 0.9V instead of 1.8V. I changed now R7015 C7015 and R7016 C7016. But all the same. 0.9V only. But only If know right the 1.8V.

Okay. So when the magsafe light is green. The fuse is giving altering voltages from 13v to 0v. Always starts from 13v and then reducing to 0v.
When the amber light stays the voltage is steady 9,7v.

I think I measured the u7000 pin2 and the voltage was 16v
And G3hot was there when the battery was not connected.

The altering voltage and the steady 9,7v is ofcourse when battery connected. The fuse gives 0,2v when battery is not connected. But the u7000 pin2 is 16v when battery not connected.

If the isl625 is bad, is it possible to replace diy -way?

Just noticed that after measuring and after the battery been not connected and connected again, the amber light doesn't light anymore. Everything else is just like I listed.

This is funny because this is actually the starting point when I started to 'fix' this problem. I had this mbp in box for three months and the amber light wasn't there before yesterday.

strange.

Edit. I think that it has to do with battery power so low that it won't give power to logic board. While still having power it somehow affected the charger chip?

Hi ZZZAC.

Will be looking at this as soon as I can find the board view file for K87 board
820 2877B or 820 2567A If any one can help with this file. I have the schem. file.
Its a mid 2010 13" This borad is new to me.

How are you doing with your boards? Do you have 3.2v on pin 14 U7000 ?

That was a ONE WIRE problem. Near U6900 there was a corrosion in the through hole. There was no contact between the upper and the down side. Thanks guys.

After quite a while, I found some time to work on it again.
And I'm glad this great forum ist still well awake.

It turned out SMBUS_SMC_BSA_SDA was at 1,1 V only.
unsoldered and checked R5280, C6952 and D6950.
Finally cut the pcb track to U7000 and it turned out U7000 is the culprit!

I have a lot of experience with the soldering iron but don't possess any QFN/BGA hot air tool, so i think I will buy some AOYUE 852.

Can anybody recommend this or something in the same price range?

Mid 2010 reboot Loop

I'm working on another water spilled board.

It's a Mid 2010 board.Magsafe goes green and Battery is charging.
On battery it switches on, fan is running low, DVD spinning up and seeking.
No chime, no display. After about 10 seconds fan stops, the board reboots, and keeps in that loop infinitely.
With magsafe, after the second loop, the fan is running very high, and keeps running high until I shut the board down.
It seems to have almost the same Issue as musicloverdenon's

measurements:
ALL_SYS_PWRGD is 3,350V and drops to 0V during reboot
PPVCORE_S0_CPU is 1,015V <- is this correct?

What should I test next?

my entire repair work has turned to mush
The baords i was talking about have made no progress
Another board came in for a u7000 replacement, replaced the chip and got all the same problems as my other baord. I think its due to oxidised and old chips that become very difficult to solder with. This issue has only recently occurred and ive done quite a few of these repairs before, i think its a certain supplier thats caused this.

A board i desperately need sorted is now quite nearly there i hope.
I have 12v, g3hot, 3.2v on pin 14 of u7000, everything seems to be firing as normal.
However everytime i put a load on it (put the fuse back in place) the fets q7030 and q7035 blow up.
I think its because for some reason q7080 and q7085 are only givving it 11v and fluctuating therefore running the fets under there standard operating voltage causing them to blow 🙁

I cant figure out why, both the inrush fets are fine, so are the gate resistors.ect 😕

I add this: g3Hot is present with battery and with magsafe too, floating around 3.46/3.47v!
