I knew that SMC has an effect, but not this much? I recently had my logic board replaced under warranty. Ever since I got it back, the laptop was idle around 60C. So I reset the SMC last night at it sits around 40C.

How can that have such an effect? Its certainly not placebo, as the bottom of the laptop was roasting hot before and fans kept ramping up!

Mainly because the logic board was replaced but a setting might be causing conflicting commands and even unintended CPU usage putting your Mac at higher workload and hence temperature. Resetting the SMC clears all commands and any conflicts, which hence you might see better system response.

Weird, I did the exact same thing today, for the same reasons, I would say a 20 degree drop sounds right here too, and my board was replaced 2 weeks ago.
