I installed smcfancontrol and raised the minimum speed a bit. However, after using plex to watch a movie, I noticed that the temps are up to 70, with the fans still spinning at the lowest speed.

Could it be that the smcfancontrol has disabled the speed adjustment?

Right now, the temp is sitting at 58 C, and my fans are spinning at 5500rpm - the speed which I have set as the minimum when I noticed the temp going up.

Just uninstall it and let the OS do it's job. The factory settings work quite well at keeping the laptop cool

curiosity, when does your fans kick in? Mine (MacBook Pro) kick in 70+ celsius.

~68C CPU temperature

IMO, if this were a problem, Apple would have set the software to kick the fans in sooner. The only times I get upto these temperatures is during Hulu 480p streaming or heavy video work. Day-to-day, I rarely see temps above 60C on the CPU it seems.
