I used this:

Once the emoticons are enabled you can then delete the app.

I have emoji, works fine, no complaints with it at all.

UK user, just dowloaded Emoji, am on O2, but when sending SMS messages to my wifes phone also on O2 but a Sony Ericsson they dont appear.

Are there any Smiley packages a bit more 'universal'?

I don't think so... these emoticons are iPhone to iPhone... If you want to show up on your sony phone I think you'd just have to type : )

Correct, it's not "universal" in the way you want.
