.SMl and .SRT File Types

These two file types came with a movie I downloaded, the movie is in .mkv format. I was just curious what these other files are.

My first thought was maybe subtitles or something but I am not really sure.

.srt files are subtitle files.

Do you know how I would go about including these with a video file to burn on a dvd more specifically burning an mp4 with toast titanium 10, how can i properly add subtitles to be toggled on or off?
