Smooth pre-order transition from AT&T to VZW?

Looking to get the 5 for both me and my wife, but we will be moving from AT&T to Verizon. We are both on the same account and will want to keep it that way.

How does this work with pre-ordering? Do I need to pre-order in store? Or can I order through the apple site and just say it'll be on VZW, and then go into a store and transfer our phone numbers?

Also have the issue that we'll be leaving the country on 9/26, and which is the Wed after release date (9/21, Friday). So if we didn't get them before that, we wouldn't be back for 10 more days. Ugh.

Call Verizon and AT&T to know what will happen and needs to be done for this to happen. Remember, breaking contracts involves ETFs and the likes.

Same boat here. I have a AT&T 4 that is out of contract. I want to port my number to verizon with this 5. I'm hoping I can just preorder a 5 and deal with VZW on this once received?
